The report revealed that only a few countries are on track to achieving the seven commitments of the Malabo Declaration, all in order to reduce hunger and poverty by half in 2025. In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future we bring you the recent the recent lecture in memory of Onkgopotse Abram Tiro delivered by Prof. Patrice Lumumba at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. Abram Tiro died in Botswana in 1974 when a parcel bomb sent by apartheid assassins exploded in his hands, killing him instantly. He was a fierce opponent of the apartheid education system.

In week’s edition of Africa of the Future, we celebrate the legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo and we focus on his leadership qualities such as honesty, integrity, inclusivity and his ability to listen to others. In this week’s programme we look at whether African governments are investing enough in research. And we also look at the role of the youth in agriculture. This comes in the wake of the 3rd Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development or GCARD held in South Africa early April 2016.

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future we focus on issues of peace and security in Africa following the recent African Leadership Forum held on South African soil for the first time. Convened by former presidents of South Africa and Tanzania, Thabo Mbeki and Benjamin Mkapa respectively, the forum bring together former presidents of a variety of African countries to deliberate and share views on pertinent issues of development. This year’s theme of the forum was “Peace and Security for An Integrated, United and Sustainable Africa.”

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future we take a look at the migrant crisis in Europe. Many have died taking the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. Those who succeed to reach any of the European countries find that they are not welcome. We find out who these people and where they come from on the African continent. We also find out what makes them risk their lives as they try to make their way to Europe. To help us understand this phenomenon we engage Itai Veriri of the International Organsation for Migration (IOM), Maousi Segun and Dewa Mavenga of Human Rights Watch – Africa division.

In this edition of Africa of the Future, we take a look at what has a happened since the New Development Bank was established by BRICS countries in 2014 and we also look at the challenges and the way forward. BRICS is grouping of five emerging economies which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future, this being Women’s Month, we bring an exclusive with Thierry Bashala on the work done by the Zoleka Mandela Foundation, including feeding the hungry and homeless. Zoleka Mandela is the granddaughter of the iconic South Africa leader Nelson Mandela and is married to Thierry Bashala, a young Congolese national. Her foundation is inspired by her battles with cancer, drug and alcohol at a young age. The foundation also plans to extend its footprint across the borders of South Africa. In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future we look at how public procurement can be used for development in Africa and to ensure the system is free of corruption fraud. This follows the High Level Public Procurement summit held in Johannesburg. An initiative of the African Development bank and the World Bank, the summit was attended by various African finance ministers and academics in the field of procurement. In the programme we hear from Daniel Osay Boate, a procurement specialist of AFDB based in Ghana, Natahan Jere, AFDB procurement specialist based in Zambia and Abe Ajay, CEO of Ghana Public Procurement Authority.

In this edition of Africa of the Future, we discuss the question of how citizens of Africa can best hold their governments accountable. This is because the African Union has been championing a campaign to get people to make their governments to be more accountable based on shared values of collective responsibility and gender equity. The idea is to get people at grass-root level, instead of observing the usual diplomatic channels, so that AU decisions are informed both by input from elected representatives and ordinary citizens. We feature Dr Sala Sadig Hamad, AU political affiars commissioner, Kofi Koaku, analyst and senior lecturer at the graduate school of public and development management at Wits University and African political analyst Dr Matlotleng Matlou.

In this edition of Africa of the Future 116, two African teachers, Phuti Ragophala of South Africa and Michael Wamaya of Kenya make it to the top 50 and 10 finalists respectively of the $1 US million Global Teacher Prize – a flagship event of, and a culmination of the 3rd Global Education and Skills Forum 2017 held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The prize goes to one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching profession. The other teacher we feature in the programme is Salima Begum of Pakistan who also made it to the top 10 finalists. We find out how they feel about being shortlisted and their respective journeys in teaching and what motivates them.

In week’s edition of Africa of the Future, we focus on challenges Africa faces with regard to scarce water resources featuring Chris Dickens of International Water Management, a global non-profit organization based in Sri Lanka with five offices on the continent. We also feature Ander Berntell, executive director of 2030 Water Resource Group, a public-private civil society initiative bringing together multinational companies in food and beverage industries, development agencies, the African Development Bank, the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. It has a presence in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future, we ring you part of a lecture delivered by world renowned novelist and author Prof. Ngugi Wa Thiong’o at Wits University in which he calls for the promotion of African languages by universities and policy makers on the continent. The lecture entitled Secure the Base, Decolonise the Mind comes at a time when the issue of decolonizing higher education is under serious debate across universities in South Africa accompanied by protests in support for free tertiary education.

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future, we continue to focus on media freedom and in addition we look at community media in Africa. We find out if community media can be an alternative to mainstream media. This time around we feature Prof. Tawana Kupe, deputy vice chancellor and vice principal at the University of Witwatersrand and Yengwayo Kutta, second vice president of AMARC International. This is a non-governmental organization of 4000 and community radio stations and associates in 150 countries.

This after Germany won the presidency of G20 from China in December last year and hopes to use its position to help the continent achieve economic development. G20 is a group of wealthy European nations. Thomas Silberhorn, German secretary of state in the ministry of Economic Development and Cooperation talk at length about his country ‘s plans at the T20 Conference held in Johannesburg recently, bringing together think-tanks from Africa, Germany, university leaders, decision makers and African regional organisations to discuss what future cooperation between the G20 and Africa could and should look like. We also feature Patrick Hayford, former Ghanaian High Commissioner to South Africa and Stanley Subramoney, chairman of NEPAD Business Foundation.

In this week’s edition of Africa of the Future we look at health of democracy in Africa amid fears “third termism” threatening to stability. Third termism refers to a tendancy by some African countries wanting to extend their term office in defiance of constitutional prescript such as we’ve seen in Burundi.
