Power hungry and pious? The Tudor Matriarch, Margaret Beaufort

Historian Dr Nicola Tallis joined me to talk about the subject of one of her most popular books, Margaret Beaufort. Margaret has been portrayed in a fairly unidimensional way in popular culture; power hungry and pious with a myopic view of God's plan for her only son, Henry Tudor. In this fascinating interview with Margaret's biographer we learn much more about the real woman behind the enduring public image, a woman who survived the political turmoil of the 15th century but also someone who enjoyed gambling and socialising much more than we ever hear about! Finding Tudor Treasures with Dr Jonathan Foyle

Dr Jonathan Foyle is an architectural and art historian, author and presenter. In 2012, Jonathan was contacted by Ian Coulson, an Antiques Dealer specialising in beds, who was seeking assistance in identifying the provenance of a bed which he had recently bought at auction, which had been described as 'Victorian'. In this interview Jonathan talks about how he identified the bed as that of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, how it set off an interest in him to discover more lost Tudor treasures and the barriers which prevent many of his findings, including the bed, from being on public display. In this episode, Episode 1 - Henry VIII's real intention for the Monasteries of England and Wales "The starting point for the dissolution is NOT a total dissolution." The final days of Elizabeth I and the Execution of Archbishop Cranmer

Archbishop Cranmer, the architect of the break with Rome and Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, was executed in this week in history. He was burned at the stake in Oxford and his plight earned him a place in 'Foxe's Book of Martyrs'. At Christmas 1602, Elizabeth I's godson had been shocked by her appearance. By mid-February she had retreated to her favourite home, Richmond Palace. As thoughts turned to how events may go when the Queen passes, which surely she was soon to do, she was all to aware that people were looking to her successor. Anxiety and melancholy dogged the Queen in her final weeks and after a fraught few days when the Queen refused to rest, she was moved into her bed. She died in the early hours of the 24th March 1603. Helen Carr on John of Gaunt

In this month's historian interview, with Helen Carr we explore the life of a man you probably didn't know was so interesting.....John of Gaunt! Known mainly as the father of the usurper Henry Bolingbroke and of the bastard Beaufort line of Margaret Beaufort, through whom Henry VII claimed legitimacy for his claim to be King of England. There's lots more to this man than you may realise, not least that he was King of Castile and it is from he that Katherine of Aragon claimed descent from kings of England (his father being Edward III). I hope you find this interview as interesting to listen to as I found it to record. Get full access to British History at philippab.substack.com/subscribe

The Downfalls of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, with historian Gareth Russell

Why did Henry VIII have two wives executed? We can learn a lot about the circumstances which led to the executions of Anne Boleyn and, 6 years later, her cousin Catherine Howard, by comparing and contrasting the two. Gareth Russell explores the events surrounding the downfall of each of the ill-fated Queens of Henry VIII in this new perspective on a familiar story and reveals a surprising fact...that Henry wrote a play about Anne Boleyn's "sexual misdemeanours" before her trial! You can also watch the interview, first released on Youtube on 13th April 2022, by clicking here. Welcome to the first episode of the podcast, which I have shared here on Substack. Estelle Paranque is the author of a groundbreaking new dual-biography of Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici, powerful contemporaries one of which took her power from being a virgin, the other from being a mother. We talk about Catherine de Medici's tragic but fascinating life and the relationship between her and England's Queen, Elizabeth I.The extended, patron-only version can be accessed at Patreon.com/BritishHistory where you can join the British History Club for just £5 per month and, as well as many other benefits, you will get the opportunity to submit your questions to all future historians. If you would like to support my work in another way you can Buy Me a Coffee!Or support for free by sharing this podcast with your history-loving friends! Thanks for reading British History!
