Great police work both by the actual police, and an internet sleuth friend of one of the victims led the police to Steven Zelich, and once the DNA evidence was uncovered, there was literally nothing he could say in his defense. Author, Willis Morgan was in the Sears in Hollywood, FL on July 27, 1981, where he had a disturbing encounter with a strange and creepy man. He watched the man go into Sears, and to the toy department. Later that day, when the news reported that a young boy, Adam Walsh had been abducted, Willis knew it had to be that guy who did it. The police began their "investigation" and were intent to pin the murder on Ottis Toole, despite multiple people reporting they had seen a blue van. Toole had a white Cadillac. And, it was found out that Toole wasn't even in Florida on the date in question, despite Toole confessing to it. Then, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested. And when his mugshot and photo went out, Morgan and other witnesses knew that it was Dahmer who had abducted Adam. Morgan went into detective mode, and put together a laundry list of evidence, even tracking down the location where the murder might have taken place. The HPD went into overdrive trying to get Morgan to go away. But in the end, Morgan put together enough evidence on Dahmer that if it went to trial, his evidence alone would have convicted Dahmer. Keith Hunter Jesperson aka The Happy Face Killer was a Canadian born US Serial killer. He was a long haul truck driver, and used that occupation as a cover for his hobby. He had an abusive father, who he blamed for his issues. He would taunt the police and media with detailed letters about his murders. He ultimately turned himself in when he knew the jig was up, but not before killing at least 8 women. In a plot twist, when his first murder was discovered, a woman, who was allegedly in an abusive relationship tried to frame her boyfriend for the murder, and wound up implicating herself for it, and both people served 5 years for a murder that they did not commit. Jerry Brudos had issues. Born to a mother who made it known that she hated him because he wasn't born a girl, he never stood a chance. He started with his shoe obsession at 5 years old innocently enough, but his mothers reaction to it, combined with losing the only 2 people who cared about him in a matter of months, his obsession escalated. He began stealing shoes, and before too long, his obsession would grow to include women's undergarments along with the shoes. He began to have an urge to dominate women, which would lead to sexual assault, and later to murder. As an adult, he assaulted women, which led to a rape, before he killed 4 women, attempted to kidnap 2 more. He would take pictures of the women in distress, and in death, and he would rape the corpse too. This is the longest CKCB episode to date, but its also one of the most entertaining. This hulk of a man was a serial rapist, and very likely a serial killer too. He has been convicted of 2 murders, and 3 rapes, but he is suspected in MANY more. Why?Because he isn’t a serial killer, as far as the law is concerned. But, Bill has his suspicions, which he goes over in the episode. Beginning in the early 90s, a very cunning rapist would stalk and rape women all over Northern California. He had a wife and daughter, and lived a plain and ordinary life, as he raped 9+ women, although there are probably more...as well as murders. But this story isn’t just of a very slick rapist and stalker. In it, we witness the birth of familial DNA being used in cold cases, and that, combined with very impressive police work is what brought this jerk down…..after 27 years. In World War 1, the Germans perfected chemical weapons by using a bastardized version of the Haber-Bosch fertilization process that revolutionized how food was mass produced worldwide. Its still used today. It was developed by German chemist, Fritz Haber. But, when the war broke out, he found a way to weaponize it, and chemical weapons were born. Fritz Haber was dubbed the Father of Chemical Warfare, and thousands and thousands of soldiers would die as a result of its use. One battle in particular was the Battle of Osoweic Fortress, in Poland. The Russians occupied it, and the Germans wanted it due to its strategic location, and a battle broke on Aug 6, 1915. The Germans deployed the chemical weapons, and this was one of the first times it had been used. The Russians had no protection from it, and most of their battalion was wiped out. But, a group of around 100 Russian soldiers whose insides were being dissolved, charged the field in a bayonet charge. They looked like corpses running at them. The Germans thought they were zombies, and this small band of dying Russian were able to push the German battalion back, and maintain the fortress. Either way, this sparked an epic online temper tantrum of slander, threats, and double speak that would include terroristic threats from an obviously unhinged man. Sean was a momma’s boy from the minute he was born until he was arrested for murder, and he probably still is. This gave him a mindset that everyone owed him. He began his murder spree later in life than most serial killers, but he was one of the more grisly ones, dismembering his victims, and raping their corpses, and even eating some of it. He hooked up with a woman who had a troubled past, and had a skeleton in her closet of her own, but she was determined to turn her life around, and thought she had found the man of her dreams when she met Sean. She had no clue that he was a serial killer, and Sean did this for 10 years, killing 8 women. Tonight, we start a 3 part series that will wrap up our 6 case Canada Binge, with part one of Willie Pickton, a sick Canadian pig farmer who confessed to killing 49 sex workers, and was also suspected of selling human meat along with the pork that his farm produced, as well as disposing some of it at a rendering plant, that meant that human flesh was in various products that use processed food. In this episode, we discuss Willie’s horrific upbringing, and warning signs that there was a serial killer in the making. We also start discussing how indigenous women in Canada were considered less important by the police, which we’ll cover at length in part 2. Willie is believed to be Canada’s worst serial killer. He was only convicted of 6 murders, but he was charged with 20 more, and there were lots more who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown East Side during that time frame. So, get ready. This week, we’re covering the Marriotts and Melvins feud. Its Canada’s modern day drug fueled version of the Hatfields and McCoys. The 2 families were both drug dealers, and they didn’t like each other. That’s basically it, although the story is crazy, and its directly tied to the Quebec Biker War. It ends with most of the key players either dead or in prison. These families have been compared to the real life Trailer Park Boys, which is actually filmed in Nova Scotia. Joining us on this episode is Morgan Rector of Human Monsters. He was a great guest, and he provided insight on some of the geography of the story. Hey, everybody...This week’s episode was an absolutely horrific story. Canadians do their cults crazy. The first one that comes to mind is the Anthill Kids. This cult isn’t that bad, but it is in the Gertrude Baniszewski and Mother Anna’s House of Prayer level of depravity. Its called His Rest Christian Fellowship, and there is literally nothing online about it that I could find other than a 2 minute news story from when they were arrested. I found the book when I was looking for a Canadian cult to cover. This story of course has a crazy woman who thinks she’s God’s prophet, and there is lots of abuse at her hands, plus insane interpretations of the bible. There are also vulgar displays of judicial malpractice, although the police did a great job getting these people to the courtroom. It also has 2 incredibly brave kids. So, give it a listen, and tell someone about it. And this is a case of be careful what you wish for, because it was absolutely horrible. Paul and I were pissed off pretty much the entire episode. But this case needs to be better known. We are the first podcast to cover it, and I want other podcasts to cover it too. Welcome to the second episode in our Canada Binge series. Tonight, we’re covering a surprisingly unknown case. The Quebec Biker Wars. A turf war between the Hells Angels, and rival clubs, Rock Machine and Bandidos. It also involves the Quebec Mafia. This starts off when the leaders of the Montreal Hell’s Angels chapter offed leaders of northern Hell’s Angels chapters. The Montreal leaders were sent to prison for the murders, and Montreal’s Hell’s Angels chapter was left in disarray, and had lost the respect of literally all of he other Hell’s Angels chapters. Enter Maurice Boucher, who was tasked with putting te club back together and regaining the respect of the Hell’s Angels again. He meticulously did over the years, and soon, they were a force to be reckoned with once again. A new club had sprung up from the ashes of Hell’s Angels, called Rock Machine. They were led by Salvatore Cazzetta, a former Hell’s Angels member who had defected. Cazzetta also had ties to the Quebec Mafia, so Rock Machine was protected. But, Cazzetta was arrested as a drug supplier, which left Rock Machine vulnerable. What happened next was a multi year long war that made what the NYC mafia did during prohibition seem tame by comparison. So, join us as we tell this story that is full of strategy, subterfuge, drugs, violence, politics, and Harleys! Welcome to the CKCB Canada Binge! This is the first of at least 4 Canadian true crime cases in a row! And, joining us on this episode are Christie and Melissa of the Buried Motives Podcast! This episode is on Alan Legere, someone who could have been classified as the first incel. He had a typical rough upbringing that could be expected for any kid whose father walked out on him. But, he took it personally, like the world was conspiring against him. This attitude spilled into adulthood, where he began committing robberies, and assaults, and later, sexual assault attempts. People owed him their wealth, and women owed him sex, and he was going to take it. He committed his first murder by robbing an elderly couple. He killed the man, and sexually assaulted the woman, and thought he killed her, but she survived. He was arrested, but escaped, and for several months, he terrorized the small town of Miramichi. He robbed, and murdered, and had the town in panic, and stayed one step ahead of the police until he was finally caught, and locked away for good. In Lexington, SC, 1984, a 17 year old girl, Shari Smith was abducted. Nobody saw anything of use to the investigation. An extensive search began. The FBI, and John Douglass himself were on the case. And, nothing was turning up. Then, the phone calls started. A man was calling, claiming to have Shari. He began taunting the Smith family relentlessly, and they had to maintain their cool, and keep this guy on the phone as long as possible. The abductor made Shari write out a last will and testament, which he mailed to the Smiths. The calls were traced, and by the time the police got to the location, the caller was long gone. Shari's time was running out, and the taunting calls kept coming. At one point, he threatened that he would get to Shari's older sister, Dawn. He began saying incredibly sick things, making it obvious that Shari was not only dead, but that he had raped her as well. He finally gave the location as t where he had dumped Shari. About that time, 9 year old Debra Helmick was abducted. The caller continued to taunt the Smiths, and gave directions on where to find Debra's body. Finally, a break came when Shari's will was further analyzed, and the caller/killer was identified as Larry Gene Bell, a scumbag loser who John Douglass had perfectly profiled. Join us in this cat and mouse game with a sadistic killer, who turned out to be a bumbling idiot. He was sloppy, but it was rock star level police work that solved this case. Welcome to Episode 100! We made it! And, to celebrate, we’re covering a hippie trippy drug cult. The Source Family. A cult that began when hustler/con artist, James Baker opened a health food store in California, in the 60’s. With his money and fame from that, he discovered the grooviness of drugs, and began considering himself to be a guru. He ran those stores into the ground, and opened The Source, which was a health food restaurant. The stars of the time loved his health food restaurant. It was the place to be for A list Hollywood elites. He taught the teachings of the Age of Aquarius, and whatever else he dreamed up. He would later change his name to Father Yod, and amassed a following of over 200 people, crammed into small houses. And as time went on, he got crazier and crazier, forcing orgies on his entire clan. His own version of faith healing was the gospel as well. It became a psychedelic boot camp of sorts. He also decided he deserved multiple wives, because he was God. If there was any kind of legacy left behind, it was the music. He had a psychedelic traveling band, that made multiple albums, which are the Holy Grail to music collectors today. Run out of California due to allegations of underage liberties, he fled to Hawaii, where his life ended in one of the more creative ways for a cult leader to die. Let’s get Trippy Culty! We’re going back down under, to cover our third Australian serial killer. Ivan Milat was an Australian serial killer who terrorized the Outback for years. He was convicted of 7 murders, although he was suspected in many more. He liked attacking backpackers, which there were always plenty of. And, most of them were foreigners, so he could get away with it. We cover his back story from his harsh upbringing which led to his crimes, as well as a very abusive husband. Also, the extremely close knit relationship he had with his siblings. They had a gang that robbed banks, and if one got caught, another would take the blame for it. This led to an exile to escape justice, although he came back, and they story continued. He didn’t just kill his victims. He tortured them for hours before killing them. He was ultimately caught, and his trial was explosive. He was almost found innocent! It would take the testimony of a tourist who survived an attack coming to Australia on his own dime to testify, combined with weapons evidence to put him away. Ivan Milat was realistically the most prolific Australian serial killer, but because he was only convicted of 7, that title goes to John Bunting, and the Snowtown and Bodies in Barrels murders, which we covered in Episode 48. Ivan was also the inspiration for the Wolf Creek horror movie franchise. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode before we get to his first murder, but keep in mind...his first murder was more like his 20th. Bartender and model, Sandee Rozzo was shot to death in her car, in what looked like a mob hit. There were multiple suspects, and as they were ruledout, one prime suspect remained. But, he had a rock solid alibi, which was verified by several different people. Good old fashioned police work solved this case, and despite a very good plan, the murder (or murderers?) were brought to justice. A love triangle. A pawn or two. A foolproof plan. A murder mystery. And, criminals who thought they would get away with it...if it hadn’t been for those pesky police. Ok, we weren't living under rocks. Both Paul and I knew about how Jared from Subway got busted for messing with kids. But that's ALL we knew prior to doing this episode. We didn't know the sheer evil and depraved monster that hid behind the all American good guy image that he and Subway put in front of the cameras. We cover how he went from being extremely morbidly obese to becoming slim, rich and famous using the so called Subway diet. He was so famous that even famous people wanted to be seen with him. He was on every TV multiple times a day, and he became a very well paid and popular motivational speaker, while he and Subway laughed all the way to the bank. We also meet a courageous woman who Jared revealed his true nature to, causing her to launch a crusade to bring him down. This ruined her life. We also cover how his #1 man became an enabler, supplying Jared with all the forbidden treasures he wanted, and how this ultimately led to his downfall. He used his charity to fund his adventures. He flaunted how he was able to get away with his depravity, and if he hadn't been caught, he'd still be doing it, and who knows what it would have escalated to. Peter Kurten was born in 1883, the oldest of 13 kids in a 1 bedroom apartment, with a super abusive prick for a father. He would force his kids to watch him abuse and rape their mother, then he began abusing the kids, especially Peter. Peter killed 2 of his classmates, and was taken in by a creepy dog catcher who molested him, and taught him how to torture animal His father then escalated to raping Peter's younger sister. His mom caught him in the act, and he was arrested. Peter picked up where his father left off, also raping his sister. His mother caught him, and he bolted. He began breaking and entering, and raping women, but was caught. He wound up joining the army but deserted. He then began killing women, and would do prison time again. After that, he went back to his sister, who reluctantly took him because her husband insisted. He then met a woman with a checkered past that he could relate to, and they were then married. Lou Castro (Real name, Daniel Perez) was a con man, and he was really good at it. Before too long into adulthood, he began concocting an unbelievable story that would rope in the unsuspecting and people who were at the end of their rope. He began telling people that he was an angel, and that he was 1000 years old...Or several thousand years old...Or, that he had powers to see into the future and prophecy when people would die. He could also raise the dead. He could also bring people back from the dead. He himself had come back to life. In 1996, William Reece was released from prison in Oklahoma for a kidnapping and rape that he had been convicted of in 1986. Not missing a beat, he killed 4 women that we know of, 2 in Texas, 2 in Oklahoma, including a 12 year old girl. This is one where I am sure there are more victims. He had kidnapped and was going to kill and rape another woman, but she escaped. He was sentenced to life in prison for this one, but the 4 murders were unsolved. But, in 2015, DNA linked him to the murders. He confessed to murder, but not rape, and his excuses and lies are comedy gold. He was tried for them in Texas, and was given life. David Carpenter had a hard childhood. An abusive set of parents. And to top it all off, his mother made him take ballet class. He grew up to be a sadistic serial rapist and serial killer. We're releasing this one a few days early! This is our first unsolved case. Its unsolved, but it is intense, and full of police negligence. Its maddening at times. Catherine Mowrey was murdered in June of 1985 in Dallas, TX. She was found in the trunk of a car, wrapped in a blanket burrito style, with a belt tightly around her neck. The police ruled it a drug overdose, or accidental death, even a suicide. In 1993, Catherine's sister, Jo-Ann was also murdered, but that case was solved. Years later, the youngest sister, Deborah found out that the Dallas Police Department had literally done nothing towards solving this case. The went into serious depression, and unfortunately, ended her own life as a result of her depression. Deborah's daughter, Catrina Marshall, who was named after Catherine, who went by Catrina took the case. She is spreading awareness everywhere, and holding DPD's feet to the fire. Her message is clear: SOLVE THE CASE!!! She has made several things happen by doing this. I believe the case is close to being solved. Justice for her aunt, and especially, justice for her mother, whose life ended as a result of depression over the ineptness of DPD. We're going historical on you for the first time! We're covering the USS Indianapolis, which was the ship that delivered the components for the 'Little Boy' atomic bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima, during World War II. After making its delivery, it was torpedoed by a Japanese sub and sunk. The mission was so top secret, that nobody even knew the ship was missing. Sailors were in the brutal pacific ocean, starving, being baked to death by the sun, and being dried out by the unforgiving salt water...And, eaten by sharks. It would be 5 days before they were rescued. After the rescue, the US Navy was desperate to not have egg on their face, so the captain was court marshaled in a kangaroo court, and found guilty. This led to him being demonized and he ultimately committed suicide, leaving the crew members with another war to fight. We are doing a 2 episode series on the Gambino Crime family in New York City. Its not exactly a 2 part episode. Its more like 2 related episodes. In the first one, we cover the life and rise of one of the mafia's most ruthless and feared hit men, Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano, who orchestrated the hit on Gambino boss, Frank Castellano, resulting in John Gotti taking over, which leads to Sammy defecting, and turning rat for the government, in exchange for a deal that brought down the mafia as a whole. We also cover his childhood, and how he rose to be the #2 man in the Gambino family, only to burn it to the ground. Sammy then joins the witness protection program, and ships out to Arizona where he doesn't stay hidden very long. He writes a book, does interviews, almost gets whacked by the Gambinos, but winds up getting arrested and serving 20 years. Why? Listen to find out. This was a fun episode. Audio alert: We were trying something new, and Todd accidentally had a compressor going. Its not bad, but its noticeable. Brian Trimble had it all. He had a great job, and a fiancé who adored him. He also had MS though. He and his fiancé, Randi were married in a beautiful storybook wedding. But as they began their married life, Brian began feeling sheltered because his wife, Randi was as he put it over protective of him due to his MS. He became close with a coworker, Blaine Norris, who had dreams of becoming a horror movie director, and he had a script for a movie, and was determined to film it. But, he needed money, which Brian had. Randi put the brakes on it, saying that the money they had in the bank was a nest egg in case Brian's MS ever got bad to the point he wouldn't be able to work. She also forbade Brian from even being involved with the movie because the location had no cell service. Blaine then went into serious debt for the movie, which cost him his marriage. Brian became angry, and Blaine needed money. The two hatched a plan that wound up being proof that you don't want to combine horror movie lore with reality. Join us for this fucked up story. Another guest on the show, and another cult! We're covering Heaven's Gate, the Crazy Comet Cult. We discuss Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettle's background, and how they took this from a crazy idea to a legit cult that had close to 50 people when it ended. It ended of course, when the majority of the cult all committed suicide to advance to "The Next Level" which was a planet where they would live for eternity in an existence devoid of personality, feelings, and sex. These people bought in 100% to the teachings, believing that Applewhite and Nettles were the second coming of Jesus Christ, who had the tickets to leave Earth and go away in a spaceship to a better eternity, and that the only way to get there was to off yourself. What can we say? This is the most brutal and disturbing case we've covered. There's only one victim, but she was put through immense amounts of hell and torture. Gertrude, AKA Satan had a traumatic childhood that effected her for the rest of her life. She took in 2 sisters, a teenager and a kid, whose parents were traveling for work. What she did to the older of the two girls is horrific, but she also got multiple neighborhood kids in on this sick train of abuse. Not to mention, her own kids who were also active participants. This is the type of horror movie script where in the movies, the victim comes back and kills everyone. Sadly, that's not what happened here. Its brutal, disturbing and heartbreaking. Today, we start a 2 part episode on Warren Jeffs and the Fundamental Church of Latter Day Saints cult. An off shoot from the Mormon church that occurred when the Mormons banned multiple wives. Warren's father, Rulon Jeffs became the prophet, and Warren was the heir apparent. Rulon made him the principal of a FLDS school, where Warren began crafting his warped view of Mormonism, and indoctrinating the students. When Rulon died, Warren assumed the role of prophet, and not only amped up the multiple wives, he also brought in child brides, and began trafficking young girls to creepy bootlicker men in the cult. It started in Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma. But the resulting cloud went all over the country, and even into Canada. You can Google 'The Dust Bowl' for a deep dive on it, and its a good read. We do a decent nutshell version of the story in the episode. BUT, there is a story that was lost under a cloud of dust. A spree killer who used the dust storms to commit his murders in complete secrecy because everyone was inside, taking shelter from the storm. Thadius Morton, a WWI veteran who had suffered head injuries in the war, and was likely exposed to chemical weapons. After the war, he married, had twins, one twin died, and that sent him over the edge into a paranoid rage that resulted in 7 people being killed in 24 hours. Just when you think you've heard it all, you find out that there are French wine terrorists. Yes, you read that right. In 2006, CRAV, a group of French wine makers and purists who had been protesting the EU laws on wine trade upped their game and began attacking stores distribution centers, and chateaus that were using imported wine, and cheap domestic wine. These rules were cheapening the product in favor of imports and exports, taking away from the quality of genuine domestic French wine. The French are SERIOUS about their domestic wine, so they declared war to the point that millions of gallons of imported wine flooded the streets of France. They are listed as a terrorist group, and they even attracted the attention of Muammar Ghaddafi, who wanted to arm them in their fight against the French government. This is a bizarre case. It takes place mainly in the Czech Republic, in 2007, but it bounces around in a weird game of cat and mouse. It was the biggest story in that part of the world for a very long time, as new wrinkles came to light. It has child abuse, obscure cults, cannibalism, and a girl who was sex trafficked, rescued, then vanished. But, things aren't always what they seem. Or, are they? This story begins when a video baby monitor being used by new parents picked up a stray signal from a similar device nearby. It showed a small naked boy, lying bound on the bare floor of a dark room with no windows. Well, we did it. 4 serial killers in 4 weeks. We wrap it up with the gay potato man, Ronald Dominique. This puke had a very high body count for a lesser known serial killer. He preyed mostly on impoverished black men from New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. Between 1997 and 2006, he murdered at least 23 people, by luring them to their demise with promises of sex, money, alcohol, drugs, or even sex with "An attractive white woman" whom he had a picture of, which happened to be a picture of his niece. He was definitely one of the worst, but this story also comes with a twist. We talk about her upbringing, her move to the US, and how she ended up killing multiple men and her children for life insurance money, and just to flat out rob them. She would lure men to her farm and their doom, promising to combine fortunes, and marry to become some sort of a power couple. They would leave everything to come to be with her, but as soon as she got all their money, they would vanish. Another serial killer for you. In this episode, we go to South Carolina and talk about the vertically challenged, Pee Wee Gaskins. He was a confession killer, who boasted murdering more than 100 people, but he is only credited with 15, and he likely did kill several more, but they aren't confirmed. He also wasn't a typical killer either. Most serial killers only target strangers. Pee Wee only killed people he knew personally, with the exception of 2 hired hits. Buckle up, Buttercups! This is a long and crazy one. We cover the narcissistic con man, Larry Ray. He became a successful parasite on the Wall Street and political stages by pretending to be something he wasn't. He scammed everyone, including the FBI, the mob, and even the CIA. We do a deep dive on his rise that resulted in a prison sentence. Once released, he moved in with his daughter and her dormmates at Sarah Lawrence College in NY where he quickly took control of them using cult like brainwashing techniques and abuse. In the 80's and 90's, the media, politicians, and religion worked the US public into a hysteria, convincing people that the country was full of satanic cults who sacrificed children to the devil. It was all predicated by the book, 'Michelle Remembers' which was a load of shit concocted by its author, a psychologist, and his wife, a former patient of his. Everyone was being accused of being in a satanic cult. Lives were ruined. Families were destroyed. Something or someone was to blame obviously, right? And the scapegoat? Heavy metal music. We tackle this infuriating case of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy that is likely the worst example of it. Dee Dee Blanchard kept her daughter, Gypsy Rose in a torturous life, isolated from everyone and forced her to take all kinds of medicine and undergo many unnecessary surgeries and procedures. And, she became a minor celebrity as a result while scamming charities, good people, the government, media, and everyone else she came into contact with. Gypsy was perfectly healthy, but Dee Dee kept her imprisoned, and convinced that she was deathly ill. Even to the point that she convinced Gypsy Rose and everyone else that she was younger than she actually was so that she could continue her torture for years after Gypsy turned 18.But, Gypsy Rose eventually learned the truth and snapped. They believed among other things that God would heal anything wrong with you, and going to doctors was a sin.  The church had a very high body count of people dying of preventable ailments. And, if you died, it was because your faith wasn't strong enough, and you had unconfessed sin. They also believed that only the people in their church were going to heaven. On April 23, 1987 crazed and mentally ill William Cruse killed 6 people, and injured 14 others at 2 shopping centers in Palm Bay, FL.
