Let’s pause and get on the same page. Language plays a crucial role in shaping culture and creating a sense of familiarity and understanding. And, a word used quite often in our conversations here is integration. What does it mean and why does it matter?   In 1 Thessalonians 5: 23 we see, “May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together - spirit, soul, and body - and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ.”   We are all on a journey toward more wholeness, more integration. Let’s define integration under our Biblical lens, particularly as we look at our bodies and sexuality through a more celebratory view. Let’s continue to uproot misconceptions and shame that lead to disintegration and disconnection as we learn to lean in to the stirring of God toward more healing and wholeness. Let’s have a practical chat, rooted in spiritual truth as we answer a recent listener question. Francie, my physical well being often suffers at the expense of serving my children. How do I take time for myself at the expense of my children when the Bible is so clear about placing the needs of others above my own? Many of us have fallen prey to the trap of dualism - the idea that some things are sacred and some things aren’t. We tend to categorize certain activities as spiritual, even more important, and diminish the needs of the body. Let’s unpack what integrated living looks like. Friend, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Your body and the Spirit go hand in hand, so what does it look like to glorify God with your body? It involves caring for your body, nourishing your body and even seeking rest when needed. The topic of sex so often shuts us down. The thought of learning or growing isn’t even an option when it’s a no-go territory. Yet, we learn about creation in two ways: through God’s words (the Bible) and through God’s works (His creation, which includes you and me). The body is His design. Is masturbation right or wrong? There’s a healthy pause that comes with answering this question because it’s quite layered and there isn’t scripture that provides a firm answer. Yet, we know that all things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial.    In this conversation we’ll take a bigger picture view at the issues involved. Touching yourself or doing something in private that you want to keep secret is riddled with shame and not helpful to your marriage connection. Many of us were raised in the purity culture. As we have become wives, we are unpacking some unhealthy, unhelpful influences. In this episode we’ll discuss a few of the unhelpful lies and the heaviness of legalism that many of us have believed. Christian women aren’t sexual. Good girls don’t talk about sex. Thinking about sexual desire is a waste of time. Sex is for men and their pleasure.   These falsehoods are rooted in lies from the enemy that have been with us for centuries. As we uproot the lies, we can look at God’s good design and learn to walk in freedom and abundance. While we see the command was the same, we see three different heart postures, actions and results.    Let’s dive into Genesis 1 and observe that our sexuality, our body, our gender and sex, pleasure and desire are gifts from God we're called to steward.     So often in our Christian culture we’re afraid of sexuality, our bodies and pleasure. What’s okay for Christian marriage in the bedroom?    Maybe that’s the wrong question. Married sex can be a playground, filled with creativity and adventure. In this episode, we’ll reframe the question and perhaps help you process and give yourself permission for a little bit of adventure and freedom in your marriage bed. God created you in a wonderful way and designed married intimacy as celebration.   The bodies of a husband and wife are designed to fit together perfectly and there isn’t a mandate saying you need to add anything. The body keeps the score.   God designed your body with great intention and care. Let’s talk about image bearing power, because what your body reveals is really good news. As you teach your children to watch for the cultural cues that seek to elevate ideas that don’t align with God’s goodness, let’s look at the good news that the body itself reveals.   God uses visible things to reveal what is invisible about His nature. This is true for your body. You can see something about our invisible God through the body. We can know God by observing the things He has made.    Sexuality and gender is like a clue to show us what God is like and how we can show God to others through the body.    Your body is good!
