Revived Thoughts Deep Dive: Taiping Rebellion

The Taiping Rebellion is a story hardly anyone knows in the West. Learn the story of Hong Xiuquan, and the Rebellion he caused that changed the world. John Stam: Commencement Address to the Moody Bible College Class of 32!

Check out our new show! Martyrs and Missionaries D. L. Moody's famous Bible Institute had a commencement address from John Stam two years before he and his wife are martyred on the mission field. His incredible life will serve as a witness and a testimony to God's good work. This biography is part of a two parter with the other half of the story available on the first episode of Martyrs and Missionaries. Check it out here. In this sermon, "Commencement Address," you will hear the echoes of sermons by Hudson Taylor as he encourages his audience to be willing to go to the ends of the Earth for the Gospel. This address and desire to live and serve God is as timely today as it was then. Special thanks to Chips Ross for reading this week's sermon. Chips Ross was born and raised in California and got converted to Christ when he was ten at the re-enactment of a drama on DL Moody's life. He was also former alcoholic who was once known for his terrible drinking binges. In this sermon, "Quit Your Meanness!" listen to a sermon that challenges our addictions to different sins. Boniface: Faith and Works Of Love

Boniface was known as the "Apostle to Germany." A great continuation of the episode we did on "Gregory The Great," who sent missionaries to England. Now England, about a century later, is sending missionaries to continental Europe. And Boniface is a literal axe-wielding no non-sense preacher who was so beloved his church in England followed him into Europe. In this sermon, Boniface preaches a final farewell to a group and leaves them with his final thoughts on what makes up the faith. He goes through the disciplines and virtues that are expected among the members of Christ. Special thanks to Ed Beckell for this sermon. Origen: Sermon From Ezekiel

Origen is a church father born in 185. He has led a life of controversy, and Joel and I discuss some of these. But he also is one of the most passionate defenders of the faith that you have ever heard of. His sermon from a series on Ezekiel goes after false teachers and challenges us all to make sure that we do not follow into heresy. He reminds us that the gift of discernment was given to us by God and should be used by believers. Special thanks to Justin Becker. Justin is the editor and a voice actor for the podcast Biblical Chili. He has spoken several times on topics like Biblical End Time Prophecy and Biblical History but his favorite, that he has independently studied since 2003, is Young Earth Creation. Justin and his wife Tonya have two beautiful children together Jasper and Storye. One of his most burning questions that he has for the Lord when he returns is, 'What's up with the duck billed platypus?' Thomas Watson: The Christian Joy

Thomas Watson was a Puritan from the 1600s who suffered a lot in the name of Christ. Between multiple imprisonments, surviving the different laws passed against Puritans, and the loss of four children, his life was far from perfect. Yet his sermon, "The Christian Joy," explains the importance of finding joy in our walk with God. A man who did not live a life that we would measure as "good" tells us about Joy. Special thanks to Tom Sullivan. Tom recently retired from the Postal Service where he has worked since 1994. He began narrating sermons in December of 1985 for the Chapel Library when it was in Venice, FL. He teaches American Church History and The Theology of Christian Experience. He has lived in Grand Rapids, MI for 31 years and has been a Reformed Baptist since 1984. Andrew Murray: The Power Of Persevering Prayer

Andrew Murray lived in Europe and South Africa during the 1800s. Famous for his ministry and revival in South Africa, and his work with the Dutch, he left a powerful mark on the Earth. His devotional on prayer is still widely read to this day. His sermon, "The Power Of Persevering Prayer," convicts us to go to God in prayer repeatedly and regularly. He asks us not to give in but to choose and pursue God like the widow at the door of the judge. Special thanks to Drew Temple for reading this sermon. Richard Baxter: Why Self Denial Is Necessary For Salvation

Richard Baxter lived through the 17th century and is a man who is hard to describe in any one word. He fashioned himself a peacemaker but got into more conflicts than most preachers on our show. After the brutal English Civil War he would be persecuted for his faith but he never caved in his desire to preach Jesus Christ. His sermon, "Why Self Denial Is Necessary For Salvation," challenges us to give up ourselves in pursuit of God. Too many try to have God and not give anything of themselves up but Baxter would argue that this is something that is impossible to do. Special thanks to Vincent Silva for reading this sermon. I'm a native from southern NM, and now lives with his wife of almost 37 years and 5 children in Boise, Idaho. I'm retired from the NM public schools and also a retired from the Air Force. John Wycliffe: The Spiritual Battle

John Wycliffe, "the Morning Star of the Reformation," lived in the 1300s. He helped translate the Bible out of Latin. He wanted to see reforms happen in the church. And this was all rooted in his experience with the black plague. His sermon, "The Spiritual Battle," takes us back to what it is that causes us to sin. Our flesh not being properly disciplined and our lack of focus on the next life. That the physical is not what causes us problems, but the spiritual. Special thanks to Jonathan Thiede. Richard Sibbes: I Am My Beloved, And My Beloved Is Mine

Richard Sibbes was a largely influential minister in the early 1600s. He is known for his "affectionate theology" and his elegant words on one's relationship with Christ. He was a member of the church of England but would get in trouble at times for his ties to the puritans. His sermon, "I Am My Beloved, And My Beloved Is Mine," takes Song Of Solomon allegorically and puts Christ in the place of Solomon and the woman as the church. He then uses this relationship to describe our current relationship with Christ as we wait for Christ to come back. Special thanks to Lee Jones for reading this sermon. Lee Jones is an Ohio-based self professed theology nerd and podcaster who works in the nursing home industry. Oswald Chambers - Arriving At Myself

Oswald Chambers was a preacher who lived during World War 1. He died of a botched surgery in Egypt but before he did, he preached many sermons that were copied down by his wife. His wife took these and turned these into devotionals, the most famous of which is, "My Utmost For His Highest." In this sermon we look at where our identity should be in this world. God is the only one who we should put our identity in. When we surrender our identity to Christ we become what we are actually meant to be. RT Selects - Hudson Taylor: The Source of Power

Hudson Taylor is one of the most famous missionaries in human history. The mission he led to China changed the Chinese church forever, leading to thousands converted in his time and the creation of a mission agency that is still around today, Overseas Mission Fellowship. He took the revolutionary route of not forcing western culture on the people he was trying to reach out to, but to adopt the customs that were not against God's word such as hair styles and dress. This helped change the mission field forever as missionaries became less cultural missionaries and more Gospel missionaries. In this episode, Hudson Taylor explains the source of power available to all Christians to do God's will for them in their lives. He also encourages us to live a life filled with purpose to win lost souls to Christ. We explore the life of this seventeenth century preacher who was not expected to be much of anything in life. This sermon, "Last Sermon," is the last sermon he ever preached. Preached 12 days before he died he makes the case that we can know whether we are saved by comparing our physical lives to our spiritual ones. Special thanks to Mike Clark for reading this sermon. Mike is an evangelical Christian pastor with more than 20 years of ministry experience ranging from Student Ministry, to Worship Ministry, Evangelism Training, and preaching.   He is currently the worship pastor of The Way Church in Denver, CO, where he has served faithfully since July of 2014.   We have new T-Shirt designs and an amazing new mug to order! Andrew Gray: Faith

Andrew Gray was a preacher who lived in the 1600’s. The one thing about his life that stands out is that his life was short. He died before his 24th birthday. But in those 2 and a half years he preached he made a huge impact. This sermon, “Faith,” talks about what our faith is in God. He defines it and describes it and helps us to better understand this important but sometimes abstract concept. He also speaks as a man who took his faith incredibly seriously, even as one who was young and died at a young age.  Special thanks to Will Smith for reading this sermon. William Hay Smith was born and raised in Peterhead, in the North East of Scotland. Through the kindness of God he was saved by Christ as a young child. As a young man he was given the opportunity to study Chemical Engineering in London, England where through the hard work of various Christian friends and mentors he gradually appreciated more and more the awesomeness of Jesus. His secular work, as a professional engineer, has allowed him the privilege of living in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, France and for several years, even the great State of Texas. Currently he serves at Christ Church Mayfair. Alexander Maclaren: Why Does Love Delay?

Alexander Maclaren is a preacher who was considered one of the best preachers of his era. But unlike so many preachers, he was a quiet man who did not become famous for book-writing or big ministry projects. He just enjoyed preaching and really believed what he preached. This sermon, “Why Does Love Delay?” Maclaren asks the question, “Why doesn’t God always answer our prayers?” Or why does he wait? Maclaren says God does all things for the good of those who believe, and even when he tarries, he is doing good for the believers.Special thanks to Jeremiah Wheelersburg for narrating this week’s episode. J.C. Ryle: The Christian Race

J. C. Ryle is a preacher we have looked at before. You can check out his episode, “Unbelief- A Marvel,” in our catalog. But this week we’re looking at his time in ministry and the “hustle” he put in for years. Prior to being a famous tract writer and preacher, he was a man who was preparing sermons for publishing, writing tracts, and working tirelessly in the background. These years of preparation paid off when the time came, but in his running of The Christian Race he spent years in training. This sermon, “The Christian Race,” Ryle gives us encouragement on the race that we must all run in our faith. He talks about those who have gone before us, the prize that we have ahead, and he does so in a way that will leave you convicted and ready to go.Special thanks to Ed Backell for narrating this week’s episode. Martin Luther: The Forgiveness Of Sins

Martin Luther is one of the most famous Christians that has ever lived. His story of nailing the 95 Theses on the door of the church, the “kick-off” of the Reformation, is lauded as one of the biggest turning points in world history. And yet, we often forget about the challenges that the peasants of that day would have been up against. This sermon, “The Forgiveness Of Sins,” (Self named, originally called the Sermon After Easter Sunday), Martin Luther reminds us that we do not work to have grace but that God gives it to us Himself. We can do nothing. He does it all.Special thanks to Bryan Wolfmueller for reading this episode. Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller is pastor of St. Paul and Jesus Deaf Lutheran Churches in Austin, TX. Lemuel Haynes: Universal Salvation, An Ancient False Doctrine

Lemuel Haynes was a Revolutionary War soldier and a pastor in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. He was also an African American preacher who preached to largely white congregations in the North East. He was the first African American ordained and also awarded an honorary master’s degree in North America. This sermon, “Universal Salvation – An Ancient [False] Doctrine” came following a sermon at his church minutes before by a Universalist. When asked if Lemuel Haynes had anything to say, he delivered this off the cuff but scathing attack. George Matheson: The Patience of Job

Revived Thoughts Is Back! In 1885 a blind and Scottish preacher was asked to speak before Queen Victoria during the height of the Victorian era. His preaching had become famous and despite his difficulty seeing, he made up for it through memorization of the Word. His fame would actually come from the hymns that he’d end up writing, the most famous of which, “Oh love that will never let me go,” is still being sung today. His sermon, the Patience Of Job, was so beloved by Queen Victoria that she insisted it be published. A personal copy was made for herself and stored in her private library for her to read whenever she pleased. Reporters from around the world talked about this great sermon and the blind preacher who delivered it. But over time, the sermon was lost. Until only one known copy existed. As Revived Thoughts returns for season 2, we present this amazing sermon to you again.Special thanks to Jonathan Thiede for reading this episode of Revived Thoughts. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Lazarus And The Rich Man

We return to Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the 1930’s of Germany. He was a man who would die young as he continued to return to Nazi occupied Germany despite the threats to his own life. He wanted to help the church, and when he got removed from the pulpit he would help build underground church movements in Germany. He was a staunch supporter of the Jewish cause and rabidly anti-Hitler. In the sermon, “Lazarus and the Rich Man,” we get to hear his thoughts on the story in Luke 16 of what happens to the rich man and Lazarus. Bonhoeffer challenges us not to look past the real message of the text and try to make it say something it doesn’t. He also warns us that the same fate awaited the rich man and Lazarus, and awaits us as well. This episode's sermon was preached by Dustin Garret, a representative of Samaritan Ministries. Check out more from Dustin: https://www.facebook.com/dustin.garrett.39 https://www.instagram.com/dustin_garrett_/ If you'd like to narrate a sermon, send us an email at [email protected] if you enjoy the show, sharing with friends and a 5 star rating on Apple helps a lot! Revived Thoughts Introduction

It wasn’t that long ago when people read sermons. Pastors and preachers would have their sermons written down and sent out for everyone to read. It was similar to how we read blogs today. But this all stopped when audio was invented. After people started to listen to sermons on the radio, they stopped reading them. Sermons should be heard. The old sermons that were written down were forgotten. For over a hundred years countless great sermons haven’t been heard by anyone. And we limit ourselves by choosing only to listen to sermons from today. This is all changing! Our goal is to bring these sermons back to life. Many great theologians were preachers, missionaries, and professors. We read their books today. But what did they tell their congregations? What was their week to week advice on how to live? The way to live out their theology is found in their sermons.  Website Facebook Instagram   Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
