PSG Dominates Old, Slow, Real Madrid in Champions League
There's a reason why Real Madrid supporters are looking forward to the summer transfer window and that's because last Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain showed the world just how far behind they are.On this new and improved episode of The 1970, Marc Damon and I chat all about PSG's win over Real Madrid on Twitter Spaces following the final whistle at the Parc des Princes and we're joined by fans around the world, including one Real Madrid supporter. The show begins with Marc and I sharing our thoughts on PSG's performance and how Mauricio Pochettino deserves credit for getting the tactics right. We also discuss Kylian Mbappé's special performance and how PSG was right in not accepting Real Madrid's offer last summer. Could a win against Los Blancos convince the Frenchman to stay in Paris? We also discuss how Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi shut down Real Madrid's attack and how they were able to get forward as well. What a difference having world-class full-backs can make!Later in the show, we welcome a Real Madrid fan to explain why his team looked so bad and whether they can turn it around in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium without Ferland Mendy and Casemiro due to suspension.Long-time PSG Talk contributor, Eddie Razo, dials in to give his thoughts on Lionel Messi's lackluster performance where he missed a penalty kick and what PSG fans should expect from him throughout the rest of the season. We also are joined by other PSG fans to talk about Neymar Jr.'s cameo and whether Sergio Ramos should start in the return leg over Presnel Kimpembe. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Pochettino Finally Gives PSG Youth a Chance
It took until the second to last match of 2021, but Paris Saint-Germain supporters finally got to see Sergio Ramos and Xavi Simons start a match. Is it a coincidence that the club won that match 3-0? We think not.On the latest episode of The 1970, I'm joined by co-host, Marc Damon, to break down PSG's win over Entente Feignies Aulnoye Football Club in the Coupe de France, recap the UEFA Champions League draw, and answer a couple of questions from listeners.Up first, we examine Sunday's 3-0 win over SC Feignies where Kylian Mbappé scored a brace and Mauro Icardi chipped in with a goal as well. We debate whether Mbappé was in the wrong for his reaction to a poor pass from Simons, marvel at the offensive ability of Ramos, and react to the performance from several of PSG's youngsters who made an appearance in the match.Next, we get into the chaotic Champions League draw. Initially, PSG drew Manchester United in the Round of 16, but after an error was discovered, a redo was ordered and PSG then drew Real Madrid. Is this a favorable matchup for PSG and how will the removal of the "away goal" rule impact Mauricio Pochettino's tactics? Finally, we answer questions from listeners who want to know more about PSG's youth academy and look ahead to the club's upcoming fixtures. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Decision Time for PSG and Pochettino
With the fanbase at odds, Paris Saint-Germain put forth another disappointing effort and time is running out on Mauricio Pochettino. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon and we discuss PSG's recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League and the future of the manager. If you were to just look at the standings, PSG is pretty much where you would expect them to be at this point in the season. They have a comfortable lead in Ligue 1 and they'll finish just behind City in the Group A of the Champions League. The problem is the performance on the pitch.Too often this season, PSG is outplayed despite possessing one of the most talented squads ever put together. Pochettino has yet to figure out how to unlock the team's potential, but as we discuss on the podcast, he has a month to change tactics and settle on a preferred starting lineup before the second half of the season kicks off.If Pochettino is unable to figure things out, there's only one man that Marc and I can see replacing him and that is Zinedine Zidane. He has experience managing world-class players and his resume as a manager is unquestioned. As things stand now, PSG claim there has been no contact with Zidane and Pochettino will remain as manager, but a few losses and poor performances and that could change very quickly. We also discuss the situation with Marco Verratti who is currently injured and missed the match against City. There's no questioning his talents, but his inability to be available for big games is a real problem for PSG and with a lack of midfield options, we wonder if PSG will sign a midfielder in January. We wrap up the show by discussing Neymar Jr.'s dip in form, especially when it comes to finishing in front of goal, and selecting who we think PSG will draw in the knockout stage of the Champions League. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Why PSG Shouldn't Sack Pochettino...Yet
If you just looked at the standings, you would think everything at Paris Saint-Germain was going well. Unfortunately for Mauricio Pochettino, it's not good enough to just win, you have to do it with style and flair. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host Marc Damon to discuss PSG's last two results and why some supporters believe it's time to make a change at manager. We begin the show with a conversation about Pochettino. There's no denying that since the club's blockbuster transfer window, which saw the addition of Lionel Messi and several other world-class players, that the team has not hit the ground running. The offense looks sluggish, the midfield is often exposed, and the defense is often caught out of position. However, as Marc and I both explain, the results are there regardless of the performance and that alone has bought Pochettino some time to get things sorted out.Next, we discuss PSG's 0-0 draw against rivals Olympique de Marseille. We start by addressing the outrageous fan behavior at the Orange Vélodrome and why something must be done before someone gets seriously injured. We also talk about Marco Verratti's injury, Achraf Hakimi's red card, and why Pochettino needs to stop starting Angel Di Maria alongside Messi, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappé.We close out this episode by talking about the narrow 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League, whether Pochettino should move to a back three defensive line, and how the German side exposed PSG's defense multiple times with the same attack. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. PSG Searching For An Identity
Paris Saint-Germain giveth, and Paris Saint-Germain taketh. It’s been a rollercoaster of performances from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad and with the international break now upon us, supporters are left wondering what direction the team is truly headed in.On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon to discuss Paris Saint-Germain's recent results, including a 2-0 loss to Stade Rennais in Ligue 1 and a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. We discuss the team's identity, the progression of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar Jr. playing together, and the ongoing bias PSG faces in the media.Up first, we dive into Sunday's result against Rennes at Roazhon Park. Bruno Génésio had his men playing against PSG like it was a FIFA World Cup Final, whereas PSG wasn't as clinical in front of goal as you would expect and let several goal-scoring opportunities go by the wayside. Was it a case of forcing Angel Di Maria into the starting lineup or the fact that Pochettino hasn't been able to implement a consistent playing style?Next, we discuss the win over Manchester City where PSG was on the defensive for much of the game but managed to score on two of their three attempts on target. Is a counter-attacking style what we can expect in these big Champions League fixtures, or should Pochettino play "heavy metal" football and try to outscore teams given the offensive talent available to him?We wrap up the show by talking about the ridiculous post-match commentary by certain analysts after PSG defeated City.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. PSG Undefeated and Underwhelming
Paris Saint-Germain are undefeated since the start of the new season, but you would hardly guess that by the reaction of many supporters who want to see more from this super team.On this episode of The 1970 (recorded last Sunday prior to the win over Olympique Lyonnais), Marc Damon is joined by fellow PSG Talk contributor, James Teague, to recap the disappointing 1-1 draw against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League.James kicks things off with his thoughts on the match, which saw Ander Herrera give PSG the early lead only to see Brugge equalize before halftime. The draw felt like a loss for PSG, and fans were left wondering how a team with so much firepower could look so impotent. The issues are plenty, as Marc points out. The midfield lacks a defensive presence, especially with Leandro Paredes on the pitch. With PSG's attack-minded full-backs, the defense was left exposed and with very little coverage, Brugge found success in the attack.PSG's offense wasn't much better. Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi all started, but PSG only managed to record nine total shots with four on target. With the offense and defense struggling, all eyes turn to Mauricio Pochettino who is still figuring things out to put it kindly. There's a lot of quality in the squad, but right now, it's difficult to explain what PSG's identity is, and with two games against Manchester City coming up, supporters are desperate to see improvement. As the guys explain, the draw against Brugge will either be a wake-up call for PSG to sort things out or, foreshadowing of the drumming that City will lay upon Les Parisiens. Let's hope Pochettino can unlock PSG's potential quick, fast, and in a hurry. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Real Madrid Rides PSG's Coattails Back to the Island of Relevancy
Lionel Messi made his Paris Saint-Germain debut on Sunday against Stade de Reims but you could argue that storyline took a backseat to Kylian Mbappé's ongoing transfer saga.On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, to discuss PSG's 2-0 win over Reims in which Mbappé started and recorded a brace. We also dive into Real Madrid's tactics in trying to sign Mbappé before the end of the transfer window and look ahead to the UEFA Champions League.Up first, we break down the Reims victory. Mauricio Pochettino's side pressed well and outstanding performances from Angel Di Maria and Achraf Hakimi thrilled supporters, but it was Mbappé's performance that stole the show. His two goals may have won the game but it was Messi's arrival in the 66th minute that everyone (including the rival supporters) was waiting for. On the negative side of things, the defense continues to be an issue with Reims attacking PSG successfully through the air. Is it time to replace Keylor Navas with the much taller Gianluigi Donnarumma?Next, we spend a good amount of time talking about Mbappé and Real Madrid. Is the offer from Madrid in good faith, or are they testing PSG and trying to force them into a bad decision? PSG has dominated the summer transfer window, is this Real Madrid's way of trying to appease their supporters to show that they're trying to sign a superstar and stay relevant? After the Mbappé talk, we discuss the Champions League draw and neither Marc or I think PSG should have too much trouble advancing, but at least one win against Manchester City is absolutely necessary. The show concludes with our thoughts on the brawl between OGC Nice, Olympique de Marseille, and Nice supporters, and the potential ratings boost for beIN Sports in the United States with Messi playing in Ligue 1.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. PSG Hit The Lottery With Messi Signing
Tuesday, August 10, 2021, is a day that every Paris Saint-Germain supporter will remember for the rest of their days on this planet. On the latest 1970 podcast, I'm joined by my co-host Marc Damon to discuss the historic moment of Lionel Messi signing a multi-year contract to become a PSG player. We open the show with our overall thoughts on Messi's arrival and how PSG managed to complete the deal so quickly once it became known that FC Barcelona could no longer afford his wages. We break down how PSG's brand will benefit from Messi's global notoriety and how this squad could be remembered forever as one of the greatest of all time if they win the UEFA Champions League. With Messi officially in the squad, the spotlight is now on Kylian Mbappé, who has yet to sign an extension with PSG. Will the France international want to stay for two additional years to play with Messi? Or, will he push for a move next summer to be the star of La Liga at Real Madrid? To wrap up the show, we talk about how Messi will impact the rest of Ligue 1. Ticket sales will surely go up, both at the Parc des Princes, and around the league for games in which Messi will feature. Then there are the television rights around the world. Mbappé Decision Overshadows Start of PSG Season
As always, Paris Saint-Germain dominated the headlines this summer with several marquee transfers and a high-profile contract negotiation that will likely linger well into the season. Even with all that going on, this could be one of the best seasons in recent memory. On the latest episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, to discuss all of the latest PSG news and answer a few questions sent in by listeners. Oh, and we take a few minutes to bash beIN Sports, the current broadcaster of Ligue 1 matches in the United States.Up first, we discuss Kylian Mbappé's contract situation with PSG. The 22-year-old superstar can leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, or, sign an extension with PSG. Mbappé has remained silent up to this point, which has led to media speculation and frustrated fans. Is there anything PSG can do to convince the player to stay or will he remain a distraction all season?Next, we discuss PSG's bloated squad. Which players will be receiving a one-way ticket out of Paris and could Leonardo, PSG's sporting director, make one more big splash in the transfer market by signing Manchester United's Paul Pogba. The show concludes with some comedy about beIN Sports programming, our prediction for Ligue 1, the UEFA Champions League, and the leading scorer. We also answer questions sent in by listeners about Mbappé, Pogba, and which formation Mauricio Pochettino will go with this season. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.

PSG's Fast and Furious Start to the Transfer Window
Sometimes, you think you have a podcast planned and then something happens that changes everything. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, to discuss the latest Paris Saint-Germain transfer news, however, all of that got pushed to the side after Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during a UEFA European Championship match against Finland due to an apparent heart attack. It was a scary scene that could have been even worse if not for the life-saving efforts from his teammates and doctors. We react to the decision to continue the match after Eriksen's collapse and the coverage of the incident in which broadcasters continued to show the Inter Milan player receive life-saving treatment on the pitch.Marc and I then attempt to transition to PSG and the transfer window that is now officially open. Earlier this week, the club officially signed Georginio Wijnaldum and we discuss what the former Liverpool FC midfielder will bring to Les Parisiens. Wijnaldum was heavily recruited by FC Barcelona and I ask Marc about his tweet in which he declared PSG as the alpha club. The signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma isn't official, but all reports indicate that it's just a matter of time until one of the best young goalkeepers in the world signs for PSG. What does his arrival mean for Keylor Navas and why would PSG make this move when other positions need to be addressed? We also discuss Kylian Mbappé's contract situation with Marc asking why the France international is holding PSG to such high standards when it comes to building a team around him while Real Madrid, for example, has been pretty stagnant in recent months. We conclude the show with a conversation about beIN Sports, who hold the U.S. rights to Ligue 1. They recently sold their rights to La Liga to ESPN, and we speculate what they might do with Ligue 1 ahead of the 2021-22 season. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? PSG Pass on Super League...For Now
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, but who can rest when there's so much going on in the world of football and Paris Saint-Germain?On the latest 1970 podcast, I'm joined by Marc Damon to discuss breaking news regarding a European Super League, the upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final against Manchester City, and the come-from-behind win over AS Saint-Étienne.Up first, we set our target on the Super League. Why have some of Europe's top clubs decided to break away from their domestic leagues and UEFA competitions? As of now, PSG has decided to stick with the current system, but could they join the Super League eventually? What all goes into setting up a new league and who are the winners and losers? We try to cover every angle of this evolving story.Next, we touch on PSG's triumph over FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League. How did PSG get past the Bundesliga giants and what changes will Mauricio Pochettino make as he prepares his squad to face Manchester City in the semi-finals. With Kevin De Bruyne potentially out due to injury, PSG is poised to take advantage and reach their second final in consecutive years. Finally, we get to PSG's thrilling 3-2 win over Saint-Étienne at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. Kylian Mbappé's brace and a game-winning header from Mauro Icardi secured the three points and pulled PSG within one point of league-leaders Lille OSC. As we look at the remaining schedule, should PSG be more worried about Lille, or AS Monaco who sits just one point behind Les Parisiens in third? As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Why We're Optimistic About PSG's Chances Against Bayern Munich in Champions League
It's been a busy week for Paris Saint-Germain. They found out who they will play in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, they took on Olympique Lyonnais in a must-win Ligue 1 clash, and there's good news regarding Neymar Jr.!On the latest 1970 podcast, I'm joined by my co-host Marc Damon and we discuss all of the latest news regarding PSG. It's the perfect companion to get you through the international lulz...Up first, Marc and I explain why we're optimistic about PSG's upcoming tie against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Les Parisiens may have lost to the Germans in the final last year, but a lot has changed since then and with a new manager at the helm, it's possible we see a different outcome.Next, we react to the news from journalist Fabrizio Romano who reported that Neymar's contract is all but done and he'll be tied to PSG until 2026. What does this mean for PSG and how does it impact Kylian Mbappé's decision to sign an extension or not?Later in the show, we try to read between the lines of Leandro Paredes's recent comments about the former PSG manager, Thomas Tuchel. What did the Argentina international mean when he said, "We all needed a mental change?"We also recap PSG's 4-2 win over Olympique Lyonnais that saw the capital club move to the top of the Ligue 1 table. Can they go on to win the league and how will important domestic matches like this prepare the squad for Bayern? To wrap up the podcast, we answer a few questions sent in by listeners, including how PSG can address their right-back issue this summer. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? No More Pretending, PSG Officially a Big Club After Knocking Barcelona Out of Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain reached the UEFA Champions League final last season but knocking FC Barcelona out in the Round of 16this season might be their most important win in the club's history of the tournament. On this episode of The 1970, Marc Damon and I sit down to reflect on PSG's 1-1 draw against Barcelona last Wednesday and the tie itself, which PSG won by a margin of 5-2.For years, PSG has bought pricey superstars in order to fast-track their status as a "big club" only to come up short in the Champions League when matched against historically great sides like Real Madrid and Barcelona. This year, though, PSG kept their composure against a squad that wrecked them emotionally four years ago and they have Keylor Navas to thank primarily. We spend the majority of the show breaking down the biggest moments of the game, including Navas' penalty save on Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembélé failures in front of goal, and Mauricio Pochettino's timely substitutions of Abdou Diallo and Angel Di Maria that changed the game for PSG.With Les Parisiens through to the next round, Marc and I look ahead as the tastiest quarter-final matchups. Do we want to see Thomas Tuchel and Thiago Silva at Chelsea FC, or is a rematch against FC Bayern Munich in the cards? Bayern's feeder club, Borussia Dortmund, remains in the tournament and I think the TV executives pulling the strings will make sure we see a Kylian Mbappé vs. Erling Haaland matchup. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Barcelona Will Flop Like Fish on the Deck
For the second time in four years, Paris Saint-Germain holds a significant lead over FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League heading into the second match. All they have to do is hold on.On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, and we spend about 30 minutes or so previewing the big match between PSG and Barcelona at the Parc des Princes with Les Parisiens holding a 4-1 advantage over their European rivals. The show begins with our overall feelings on the final match of the tie and whether the potential is there for another catastrophic collapse like we saw in 2017 when PSG blew a 4-0 lead. In fact, PSG's last two managers (Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel) have blown leads in the Champions League in spectacular fashion, will Mauricio Pochettino reverse the curse?Next, we discuss the situation with Neymar Jr., who will not be in the squad to face his former team. The PSG superstar has returned to light training but isn't 100 percent healthy. Should PSG at least have Neymar on the bench to gain a psychological advantage or are they doing the right thing saving him for an intense run of matches in Ligue 1 and the quarter-finals of the Champions League if they advance?Marc and I agree that the more boring the match is, the better things will be for PSG. If there is a red card decision against PSG and penalty decisions that favor Barcelona, things could go downhill very quickly. Make no mistake about it though, Barcelona's strategy will be to fall down in the box to deceive the referee and it will be up to PSG to play smart, fundamental football and not let Ronald Koeman's men get under their skin.To conclude the show, we give our predictions and look around at the rest of the Champions League competition. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? PSG Showcase Superior Talent Against Barcelona
***Visit https://manscaped.com and use code PSGTALK to receive 20% off and free shipping***Since the 6-1 loss to FC Barcelona in 2017, Paris Saint-Germain set out to build a squad capable of competing with the Spanish giants in the UEFA Champions League. They took Neymar Jr. from them and added Kylian Mbappé. They also added role players like Leandro Paredes and Moise Kean who would compliment their superstars. On February 16, PSG went to the Camp Nou for a rematch in the Round of 16 of the Champions League and proceeded to dominate Barcelona by a score of 4-1. PSG's superior talent was on display and on the latest 1970 podcast, we discuss how Mauricio Pochettino led his team to one of the most famous victories in club history.Joining me on the show as always is Marc Damon and we begin by sharing our overall thoughts on the match. The scoreline and performance were a surprise due to the simple fact that Neymar was out injured and he had become intricate to PSG's offense. He is the player who unlocks defenses and allows Kylian Mbappé to be special. Without the Brazilian, all eyes were on Mbappé, and boy did he deliver by scoring a hat-trick.When it comes to talent, we agree that PSG probably isn't quite at the level of Manchester City and FC Bayern Munich depth-wise, but Les Parisiens have two of the top five players in the world and no one else can say that. With Pochettino now at the helm, if he can continue to get the most out of Idrissa Gueye, Julian Draxler, Layvin Kurzawa, and others, PSG could be a team no one wants to face in the latter stages of the Champions League. In terms of the game itself, we talk about the ridiculous penalty decision given to Barcelona when Frenkie de Jong went down in the box after inadvertent contact with Kurzawa. I think the call was egregious while Marc believes while unfortunate, the decision was correct.Later in the show, we discuss whether Neymar should play in the return leg if he's not fully healthy and what PSG's mindset should be heading into that match. You'll also hear us talk about the passing of Paredes and Kean's incredible form since arriving via loan from Everton. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. The Barcelona Preview Episode
***Visit https://manscaped.com and use code PSGTALK to receive 20% off and free shipping***In just a few days, Paris Saint-Germain will have the opportunity to get revenge on the club that embarrassed them three seasons ago in the UEFA Champions League. On this episode of The 1970, recorded during Saturday's 2-1 win over OGC Nice, I'm joined by my co-host, Marc Damon, to preview the upcoming tie against FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. The last time these two sides met was during the Round of 16 of the 2016-17 Champions League. PSG won the first leg 4-0 at the Parc des Princes but went on to lose 6-1 in the return leg at the Camp Nou. Neymar Jr. suited up for the Catalan club at the time but left the following summer for PSG in a world-record transfer.Unfortunately, Neymar won't be available for PSG when they return to the Camp Nou on February 16. The superstar was injured last Wednesday in the Coupe de France against Ligue 2 side Stade Malherbe Caen. On the podcast, I express my frustration with that reality and question why Neymar was even in the lineup. We also look back to that 6-1 defeat in 2017 and debate whether that PSG squad is better than the one that will walk out on the pitch this Tuesday.Later in the show, we discuss what kind of tactics Mauricio Pochettino should deploy against Barcelona. Should he set up his side to play conservatively or more attack-minded? Who should start for PSG? The decisions Pochettino makes will ultimately determine whether the season is a success or failure. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. The Trophée des Champions was played a few months later than usual but it was the same outcome as always with Paris Saint-Germain lifting the trophy for the eighth consecutive season with a 2-1 win over rivals Olympique de Marseille. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined as always by my co-host, Marc Damon, and we discuss the win over OM that saw a first-half goal from Mauro Icardi and a late penalty from Neymar Jr., who made his first appearance since returning from injury. In just the third match of the Mauricio Pochettino-era, PSG has already won a trophy and we discuss the positives we've seen in the squad since the former Tottenham Hotspur manager took over for Thomas Tuchel. If there's a negative to point out, it's the fact Kylian Mbappé still seems to be struggling. Could the Frenchman be dealing with fitness issues, or, is he at the point in his career where he's trying to figure out what type of player he wants to be?Later in the show, we discuss PSG's full-back situation and why the club needs to make a signing during the January transfer window, Marc fat-shames Dimitri Payet, we debate whether Icardi is a top 10 striker, and we conclude by answering questions from listeners, including what in the world is going on with Mediapro and Ligue 1.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? PSG's Big Match Energy
Staring the UEFA Europa League dead between the eyes, Paris Saint-Germain rallied to defeat Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford to all but assure them a place in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. On the latest episode of The 1970, I'm joined by my co-host Marc Damon to discuss the win over the Red Devils, whether the #TuchelOut movement is still going strong, Neymar's post-game comments about Lionel Messi, and what in the world is going on with Mbappé?We open the show with a discussion about how under Tuchel, PSG has become a team that doesn't wilt under pressure. We've seen it a few times under Tuchel now and whether you agree with his tactics or not, you can't deny that the team shows up when their backs are up against the wall.PSG's two superstars made news recently but for very different reasons. After the Manchester United match, Neymar said, "what I want most of all is to play with Messi again." There's been further reporting that in fact a deal is being discussed at the Parc des Princes. Would this be a good move for PSG or should they focus on signing Mbappé to an extension?Speaking of the Frenchman, it's not been well over a year since Mbappé has scored in the Champions League. Is his contract situation distracting him or is it Tuchel's offensive strategy holding him back?We close out the show by answering questions sent in by listeners via Twitter. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? It's Time to Go!
When you've already said all that needs to be said, all you can do is echo Claude from AFTV. IT'S TIME TO GO!On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon, as always, and we discuss yet another loss for Paris Saint-Germain and try to explain why Thomas Tuchel hasn't been sacked yet.We begin with that 2-1 loss at RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League, a result that currently has PSG in third place in Group H behind the Germans and Manchester United. Is the manager to blame for the lack of energy and questionable substitutions or are there simply too many injuries to overcome? The defeat to Leipzig means PSG are staring down the barrel of the UEFA Europa League and we discuss the implications of dropping down to the lesser competition, including a change at manager but who is the best option for the club? The show concludes with a prediction for PSG's upcoming match against Stade Rennais, which neither of us are overly confident about. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Tuchel on the Hot Seat After Loss to Manchester United
Paris Saint-Germain's match against Manchester United on Tuesday night was supposed to be a chance at redemption. The Red Devils eliminated PSG from the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and their return to the Parc des Princes was a chance for Les Parisiens to prove that result was a fluke. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined as always by Marc Damon and we give our instant reaction to discuss PSG's frustrating 2-1 loss United and discuss who is to blame.According to my followers on Twitter, most PSG supporters believe manager, Thomas Tuchel is to blame for the loss to the Premier League side and Marc and I agree but for different reasons.Marc believes Tuchel's inability to create a system in which Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. can thrive is a fireable offense. While I tend to agree with him, I think Leonardo, PSG's sporting director, should make a change to inject some optimism into the squad and supporters. It worked for FC Bayern Munich last season as they won the Champions League over PSG.Tuchel may keep his job for a couple of more weeks. PSG host Dijon FCO on October 24, and then travel to Turkey to play Istanbul Başakşehir F.K. That's a game PSG should win comfortably but if things go south, it's hard to imagine Tuchel continuing with PSG and the club's future in the Champions League this season would very much be in the balance. The podcast concludes with us answering questions from Twitter, including what we think of the rumor that a European super league could be a reality in the near future. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Champions League Draw Reaction and PSG Transfer Window
After a rough start to the Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain has bounced back and strung together four straight wins. Despite the positive results on the pitch, there's plenty of drama swirling behind the scenes. On this episode of The 1970, which was recorded during PSG's 6-1 win over Angers SCO at the Parc des Princes last Friday, Marc and Ed examine the current squad and how being so reliant on Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. to score goals can be a bad thing. Has manager Thomas Tuchel become lazy in coming up with his gameplan, especially in Ligue 1 play, because he has two of the top five players in the world? We do know that Tuchel doesn't believe his team is as strong as last season and his recent comments about that have not gone down well with Leonardo, PSG's sporting director. With the transfer window coming to a close on Monday, Les Parisiens are running out of time to make the important signings that will help them return to the UEFA Champions League final. Before the Champions League final, PSG must go through the group stage and after last week's draw, we now know that Tuchel will lead his team against Manchester United, RB Leipzig, and İstanbul Başakşehir. The two games against Manchester United should be very interesting considering Angel Di Maria's history with the Red Devils and the report that Edinson Cavani could soon suit up for Premier League club. The wrap up this episode by discussing potential what may happen on transfer deadline day and we answer questions from listeners. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Fallout From PSG's Loss to Marseille & Neymar's Racism Allegations
Any time Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille get together on a football pitch, there's bound to be fireworks but last weekend, the latest installment of Le Classique crossed the line in more ways than one.Marseille's 1-0 win over PSG at the Parc des Princes was their first win over their rivals in league play since November 2011. The match was brutal to watch and included 10 yellow cards and five red cards. Referee Jerome Brisard lost complete control and towards the end of the match, there was a brawl, an accusation of racism, and a video that appears to show Angel Di Maria spitting towards an OM player. On the latest episode of The 1970, I'm joined by Marc Damon and we try to sift through the fallout and make sense of it all. The loss to Marseille was PSG's second consecutive loss to start the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season and the lack of goals has us wondering if Thomas Tuchel's tenure in the French capital is coming to an end.We also give our thoughts on Neymar's allegation that he was racially abused by Marseille's Álvaro González. There's no video evidence as of yet to confirm Neymar's allegation but considering how upset he was and the fact he went to an official right away, I'm inclined to believe him.The episode concludes with us discussing if there should be fans at the Orange Vélodrome when PSG visits Marseille on February 7, 2021, or if it's too dangerous for the visiting players. We also give new signing Alessandro Florenzi some shine as his debut exceeded expectations and he proved he is a right-back who can put a decent cross into the box.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Bayern Reflection, Messi Transfer Rumors, and Changes at PSG
Sometimes you need some time to properly reflect on a major event and that's exactly what Marc Damon and I did following Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 defeat to FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final. You can listen to the PSG Talking podcast for an instant reaction to the loss but on The 1970, we dissect what went wrong for PSG at the Estádio da Luz on August 23. Did manager Thomas Tuchel make the right decisions when it comes to his substitutions? Why couldn't Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. step up when PSG needed a goal late? One thing became abundantly clear in that match against Bayern and that is Thilo Kehrer is not capable of playing right-back at this level of football. The football world came to a standstill a week ago when the news broke that Lionel Messi wants to leave FC Barcelona. PSG are one of the few clubs who can realistically afford the 33-year-old and the rumor mill is churning out story after story about the possibility of him rejoining his friend and former teammate, Neymar, in the French capital. We wrap up the show by talking about the ridiculous criticism of PSG not keeping their best youth players, Thiago Silva's departure to Chelsea FC, and we answer listener questions sent via Twitter. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? PSG Join the European Elite With Champions League Final Appearance
Paris Saint-Germain booked their ticket to the UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday with an emphatic 3-0 win over RB Leipzig at the Estádio da Luz.It's the first time Les Parisiens have reached the final of the prestigious tournament in their 50-year history and fans celebrated around the world after the final whistle as did the PSG Talk crew. However, there's business to attend to and we're pleased to bring you a 1970 podcast. On this episode, Marc Damon is joined by fellow contributor Ty and the duo break down the win over Leipzig and explain how PSG made it look so easy. It's been a long time coming for supporters and finally, with all the chips on the table, PSG elevated their play and Leipzig didn't even look like they belonged on the same pitch. No discussion of this match would be complete without giving Angel Di Maria his credit. The winger was suspended against Atalanta in the quarter-finals but he returned to the squad and was the Man of the Match. The podcast was recorded prior to the FC Bayern Munich vs. Olympique Lyonnais match but the crew rightly assumed the Germans would advance and they provide some thoughts on the final matchup and while Juan Bernat, in particular, will be up for this match. They also discuss whether or not Mauro Icardi should return to the starting lineup or if his limitations are too risky against a club like Bayern that did defeat FC Barcelona 8-2.Before that match though, let's just enjoy this feeling of reaching the Champions League final. There's a lot of PSG fans out there that have been following the club for a long time and never thought they would be in this final. This is a major moment in the club's history and we should embrace every second of it. Allez PSG!As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? The Greatest Moment in PSG History (So Far!)
The magnitude of Paris Saint-Germain's sensational come-from-behind win over Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday still has supporters buzzing and now, the club is one win away from their first finals appearance. On this episode of The 1970, which was recorded during last Thursday's match between RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid, I return to host and I'm joined as always by fellow contributor Marc Damon. We open the show with Marc's thoughts on PSG's mentality and strategy against Atalanta and the improbable hero that was Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time. After watching PSG collapse under pressure and fail to grind out a victory in past seasons, we're finally seeing this squad show that they are mentally tough and now, the role players are stepping up when the superstars fail to get on the scoresheet.Looking ahead to next Tuesday's match, we discuss potential problems Leipzig could cause PSG and who Thomas Tuchel should start with Angel Di Maria coming back from suspension and Marco Verratti potentially being able to play after a muscle injury kept him out of the Atalanta match.Want more PSG? PSG Injury Crisis and Atalanta Preview
The return of the UEFA Champions League is finally here but before we can focus on Paris Saint-Germain's matchup against Atalanta, there's plenty to discuss from the club's two domestic cup victories and exhibition match against Sochaux. On this episode of The 1970 (recorded on August 6, 2020), Marc Damon is joined by fellow PSG Talk contributor, Ty! The conversation begins with that match against Ligue 2's Sochaux and the appearance of Xavi Simons, Kays Ruiz-Atil, and other youngsters who will look to replace the recently departed Tanguy Kouassi and Adil Aouchiche. As always with PSG, the squad has suffered several injuries to key players that make the Champions League quarter-final match against Atalanta a lot more difficult. Kylian Mbappé went down with an ankle injury against AS Saint-Étienne in the Coupe de France final and Marco Verratti reportedly picked up an injury in training before the match against Sochaux.Despite manager Thomas Tuchel lowering expectations due to the injuries, fans still expect the squad to compete and advance. How Les Parisiens can pull that off is a different story. Tuchel has to decide on a formation that can slow down the high-scoring squad from Serie A. He will be without Verratti and Angel Di Maria due to a suspension. Mbappé could play a role but it's doubtful he will be able to play for longer than 30 minutes. Could we see a return to the 4-3-3 formation? Will Marquinhos move into the midfield? Marc and Ty discuss all of the options and tactics available to Tuchel. The show wraps up with both contributors giving their final prediction for the match against Atalanta. Is this the year PSG reach the semi-finals of the Champions League? You'll have to listen to find out.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? PSG Dominate Celtic; New Kit; Mbappé Sticking Around For Another Season
Paris Saint-Germain was in action on Tuesday as they battled Celtic FC at the Parc des Princes and came away with the 4-0 victory. It was the last exhibition match before the two domestic cup finals to close out the month of July and the team far exceeded even the most optimistic fan’s expectations. On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined as always by Marc Damon and we discuss PSG's three friendlies (Le Havre, Waasland-Beveren, and Celtic) in which the Ligue 1 champions won by a combined score of 20-0.The opponents were obviously far below PSG's quality but considering the four-month layoff due to the coronavirus, it's impressive that PSG's biggest stars were able to flip the switch and score goals seemingly at will. What we've yet to learn is whether or not the players are match fit and how they will react when a team puts them under pressure offensively. Those questions may not be answered until the Coupe de la Ligue final against Olympique Lyonnais on July 31.The other big news in the world of PSG was the release of the 2020-21 home kit, which the players wore against Celtic. Not only are we both fans of the jersey, but we're even bigger fans of the partnership with Fanatics. This deal will make it easier for fans in the United States to purchase PSG gear without paying lofty shipping costs from France.Everyone expected Kylian Mbappé to stay another season at PSG and the French superstar confirmed as much on Twitter and during halftime of the match against Celtic. Does this mean an extension is soon to follow or his this a smokescreen as the 21-year-old prepares for a move to Real Madrid? The show concludes with us answering questions sent it via Twitter. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Why This is PSG's Best Chance to Win the Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain last played a UEFA Champions League match on March 11, when they advanced to the quarter-finals with a win over Borussia Dortmund. Nearly four months later, we now know who they will play in the next round. On this episode of The 1970 podcast, I'm joined by Marc Damon and we discuss the Champions League quarter-final and semi-final draw that took place on Friday.Up first for PSG will be Atalanta and if they advance past the red-hot Serie A club, PSG will take on the winner of RB Leipzig vs. Atlético Madrid for a place in the Champions League final. It's by far the easier of the two brackets but don't dare say that out loud or you'll be put in your place by the Serie A aficionados on Twitter who talk about Atalanta like they're the Boogeyman and PSG is just some pub team comprised of overweight plumbers.Considering their resources, Atalanta has outperformed everyone's expectations this season and their style of play is entertaining to watch. However, as Marc and I explain, they're no match for PSG's much more talented squad and it will take a series of mental mistakes for Les Parisiens to crash out at this stage. We share our ideal starting lineups for the Atalanta fixture and whether the three scheduled friendlies and two domestic cup finals will be enough to properly prepare PSG for the Champions League after such a long layoff due to the coronavirus. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts.Want more PSG? Kouassi and Loyalty; Champions League Format; Transfer Window Strategy
Four of the top five leagues in Europe have all resumed the 2019-20 season, but that hasn't stopped Paris Saint-Germain from making headlines despite not having any games to play due to the premature cancellation of Ligue 1.On this episode of The 1970, I'm joined as always by fellow PSG Talk contributor Marc Damon and we discussed the latest news that has supporters buzzing.Up first, we talk about the impending departures of Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva. Can these two PSG legends close out their careers in the French capital with a UEFA Champions League title and was the club right in not working out a contract extension with either of them?Next, we break down the Tanguy Kouassi situation. The 18-year-old academy graduate turned down a professional contract from PSG and instead chose to sign for FC Bayern Munich. Should Kouassi have shown loyalty to PSG or is this all part of the business of football? We also breakdown the upcoming changes to the Champions League, including a few changes we would like to be made permanent, as well as some potential transfer targets.Thank you as always for listening and be sure to subscribe and rate us wherever you download the show.Want more PSG? Nobody Fought For French Football
The last time you heard from The 1970 crew was last March when Paris Saint-Germain defeated Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.Since then, that competition has been suspended and Ligue 1 has been shut down completely due to the coronavirus. Despite the lack of matches, there's still plenty to discuss when it comes to the capital club, and joining me as always to break it all down is Marc Damon. On this episode, Marc Damon and I reflect on the decision to cancel the Ligue 1 season now that we know the other four top leagues in Europe will complete the 2019-20 season. We then look ahead at what the next few months look like for PSG as they'll face a long layoff with the Coupe de France final, Coupe de la Ligue final, and Champions League knockout stage to play in August most likely. Then, we switch gears and discuss the latest transfer rumors. Mauro Icardi staying in the French capital appears to be close to being done as well as Alex Telles from FC Porto. Will PSG make additional signings and what positions need the most strengthening? The last of our topics focus on a report from KMPG that looked at several indicators and announced that PSG is the ninth most valuable team in the world. We conclude the show by answering a few questions sent by listeners via Twitter.Thank you as always for listening and be sure to subscribe and rate us wherever you download the show.Want more PSG?
