Jon Norfolk - The Leverage You Can Create From An Under-Performance Is Really Strong

Jon Norfolk is head of coaching at one of Great Britain’s most successful Olympic programmes, British Cycling. Jon is another of our guests that has experienced competing and coaching in different cultures and environments. Having worked previously with the Australian Track Cycling Team and been head coach of the hugely successful GB Paralympic cycling programme, he was also both an International cyclist in his own right and also cycled as a tandem partner including setting a world record in the kilo at the 2008 Paralympic World Cup. We chatted about coaching the athlete In front of you and not the programme, individualisation and performance planning, the importance of having plenty of tools available to you as a coach as well as how he measures and monitors performance. He’s really easy to chat to and a very humble guy and I start with asking what excites him.Show Notes: British Cycling - https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/Australian Track Cycling Team - https://www.auscycling.org.au/Jason Queally - https://www.teamgb.com/athlete/jason-queally/69LWPBVXJblHRlPC4Y5b8FChris Hoy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_HoyCraig MacLean - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_MacLeanRio Paralympics - https://www.paralympic.org/rio-2016Marginal Gains - https://jamesclear.com/marginal-gainsMore About Jon Norfolk:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Robbie Elliott Part 2 - Being First Is Not Always The Best

This week its part 2 of my chat with former footballer Robbie Elliott. Robbie spent two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total. Last week we chatted about his own playing career and some of the iconic managers he worked under including Ossie Ardilles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalgleish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson. This week we focus on his career post playing from his role at Newcastle in the sports science department to moving to the US to join the Nike research lab and the other performance work he’s been involved since his retirement. It’s a fascinating and insightful journey.Show Notes: Mark Hulse - https://www.nufcblog.com/2009/06/27/coaches-hulse-and-elliott-leave-newcastle-for-liverpool/Nike Portland Headquarters - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pqsUfK2N1oNike European Headquarters - https://jobs.nike.com/ehqNike’s Innovation Kitchen - https://www.freshnessmag.com/2016/09/20/wired-magazine-nike-innovation-kitchen/England Rugby Sevens - https://www.englandrugby.com/england/sevens-men#indexSeb Coe - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_CoeLeBron James - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeBron_JamesTiger Woods - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_WoodsLA Sports Teams - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_Los_AngelesRed Bull Facility - https://www.si.com/edge/2015/05/08/sweat-mecca-red-bull-high-performance-centerMalcolm Gladwell Books - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Malcolm-Gladwell/e/B000APOE98?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1653303486&sr=8-2The Checklist Manifesto Book by Atul Gawande - https://amzn.to/3G7Jk3m Maradona Documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuErPYsoaR4Living With The Lions Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Lions-Sir-Ian-McGeechan/dp/B0733RMVQ7One Night In Turin Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Night-Turin-Gary-Oldman/dp/B07N126MYGESPN 30 For 30 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_for_30More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Robbie Elliott Part 1 - There's Definitely A Difference Between Luck And Fortune

After last weeks chat with Darius Charles, we stay on the football theme with another ex Professional footballer, Robbie Elliott. Robbie had almost two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for his beloved Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total, which also included spells at Sunderland, Leeds, Hartlepool and an eventful four years at Bolton Wanderers. Over his career, he’ worked under some iconic managers including Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson and we chat about all of those managers and the twists and turns Robbie had across his career and his learning from that. I met Robbie first when he was working for the Nike research lab and he’s forged a career in sports technology, innovation and performance since his retirement. All of that we will chat about in part two next week, but as we sat outside the bustling Westfield shopping centre in West London, we started with Robbie’s time in the Newcastle academy and how that compares to the modern-day set-up.Show Notes: Southampton Football Club - https://www.southamptonfc.com/Alan Shearer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_ShearerGateshead Stadium - https://www.gogateshead.com/article/5829/Gateshead-International-StadiumNewcastle Football Club - https://www.nufc.co.uk/Ossie Ardiles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osvaldo_ArdilesYTS - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Training_SchemeAlan Thompson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Thompson_(footballer,_born_1973)Lee Clark - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Clark_(footballer)Steve Watson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_WatsonJim Smith - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Smith_(footballer,_born_1940)Middlesborough Football Club - https://www.mfc.co.uk/Bobby Saxton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_SaxtonRoy Aitken - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_AitkenJohn Burridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_BurridgeACL Injury - https://mayocl.in/3MuoxcMLilleshall - https://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/nsc/ Kevin Keegan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_KeeganNewcastle promotion against Grimsby - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNk_W6CFJKwRob Lee - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_LeeJohn Beresford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beresford_(footballer)Les Ferdinand - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_FerdinandDavid Ginola - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GinolaBrian Kilcline - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_KilclineKevin Sheedy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Sheedy_(Irish_footballer)David Kelly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kelly_(association_footballer)Steve Howey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Howey_(footballer)Faustino Asprilla - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faustino_AsprillaBarry Venison - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_VenisonPeter Beardsley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_BeardsleyDavid Batty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_BattyZone Of Optional Function - https://bit.ly/3Nk3YzDKenny Dalglish - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_DalglishAlex Ferguson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_FergusonPLC - https://bit.ly/3wuJKMUBolton Wanderers Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.Steve Black - https://bit.ly/38woNJmEarl Barrett - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_BarrettMichael Appleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_AppletonColin Todd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_ToddSam Allardyce - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_AllardyceCharlie Brown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_BrownMLS - https://www.mlssoccer.com/Arsene Wenger - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars%C3%A8ne_WengerSir Bobby Robson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_RobsonFreddie Shepherd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_ShepherdNorthumbria University - https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/Bike for Bobby - https://bit.ly/3wlhNYZ=More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Darius Charles - I Was Creating A World Where Opportunities Would Come My Way

This week I’m delighted to bring you a chat with someone who grabs life by both hands, former footballer Darius Charles.Darius retired from professional footballer just a matter of weeks ago after playing professionally for sixteen years for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford and most recently, AFC Wimbledon. We talk about how he feels about that and also the journey football has taken him on personally. His mum had him when she was sixteen years old and Darius has had plenty of obstacles over his life that he has managed to overcome and use as the energy he brings to everyone he meets. We had this conversation in a recording studio close to where Darius spent a large part of his childhood, in Hanwell, West London. Darius is currently being followed by a documentary crew and our conversation in the studio will be part of a programme called ’Sidelines’, which will be out later in the year.I got to know Darius about a year ago and since then I’ve always enjoyed and looked forward to every conversation we have ever had. As he says himself, he’s a very fiery character and I think by the end of this conversation you will see how he is using that desire in a positive way, a passion that will change lives. We talk about role models, creating opportunities and being self-sufficient, the fear of your career always being one manager’s decision away from ending as well as dealing with being loaned out and Injured. But we start with that difficult decision to hang up his boots.Show Notes: Brentford Football Club - https://www.brentfordfc.com/Helen Keller - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_KellerScott Fitzgerald - https://bit.ly/3ysK4y0Thurrock Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurrock_F.C.Nathan Broome - https://bit.ly/3wlzQggGareth Ainsworth - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gareth_AinsworthGraham Westley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_WestleySocial Identity Theory - https://www.britannica.com/topic/social-identity-theoryPaulo Coelho book ’The Alchemist’ - https://amzn.to/3vYJcj1Don Miguel Ruiz book ’The Four Agreements’ - https://amzn.to/3yu8KXeThe Last Dance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQk2hJs2ToAMichael Jordan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_JordanBill Cartwright - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_CartwrightChicago Bulls - https://www.nba.com/bulls/Steve Kerr - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_KerrPhil Jackson’s book ‘Eleven Rings’ - https://amzn.to/3yrOFk4Jay Shetty’s Podcast - https://apple.co/3yrOQMgJake Humphrey's High Performance Podcast - https://apple.co/3whdZ9YSteven Bartlett’s Podcast - https://apple.co/3l0BdMhErwin Valencia’s Podcast Episode - https://apple.co/38gxqaIMaya Angelou - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_AngelouKendrick Lamar - https://www.kendricklamar.com/More About Darius Charles:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/everybody_lovesd/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/dariuscharles00LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3L0qKeqWikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_CharlesListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Stuart Lancaster Part 2 - To Get Trust, You've Got To Give Trust

This is the second part of the conversation I had with Leinster Rugby senior coach, Stuart Lancaster who has held senior leadership positions at many levels of the game including being the former England Rugby head coach. In part one we chatted about the foundations of culture, putting teams together and knowing your own personal strengths and weaknesses.  In this episode we jump around a bit again and touch on subjects like managing time and energy, continual learning and the art of teaching, but to kick things of I asked him what traits best describe him as a coach.Show Notes: Kevin Bowring - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Bowring Brian Ashton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Ashton_(rugby_union)Bill Beswick - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_BeswickRod MacQueen’s Autobiography - https://amzn.to/3vsMElQAustralian RWC Team - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_national_rugby_union_teamNewbury Rugby - https://www.newburyrugby.co.uk/teams/42243Joe Marchant - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Marchant_(rugby_union)Sarah Milne Rowe book 'SHED - https://amzn.to/3OHYQXwWarren Gatland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_GatlandOwen Eastwood - ‘Belonging’ - https://amzn.to/3k796dOOwen Eastwood Podcast Episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216?i=1000529539010Leaders In Sport - https://leadersinsport.com/South African Cricket Team - https://bit.ly/3s0HECSSophie Goldschmidt - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_GoldschmidtMichael Ala’Alatoa - https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/player?PlayGuid=MA209308Scott Robertson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Robertson_(rugby_union)Doug Lemov - https://my.chartered.college/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/1.-Cold-Calling.pdfDoug Lemoff book ‘A Coaches Guide To Teaching’ - https://amzn.to/38zBUZULeeds Carneigie - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_CarnegieJohn Wooden - 'Wooden On Leadership’ - https://amzn.to/3vHutHZRic Charlesworth - 'World’s Best’ - https://amzn.to/3K76tDmBill Walsh - ’The Score Takes Care Of Itself’ - https://amzn.to/3vDNcV2Jim Collins book ‘Good To Great’ - https://amzn.to/3kqvGOKKevin Murray’s books - https://amzn.to/3krJjNwJohn C. Stuart Lancaster Part 1 - You Don’t Get High Performance And Just Tag Culture On At The End

Todays show is the first part of another brilliant conversation, this time with rugby coach Stuart Lancaster.Stuart is currently coaching Leinster Rugby and he’s held leadership, management and coaching positions at many levels of the game including being the former England Rugby head coach. I’ve also worked with Stuart during my time at England Rugby and have coached against him during his time at Leeds and we discuss that time in both our lives later in this show. He’s a wealth of knowledge around a whole host of topics and over the two shows we delve into leadership, joining new organisations, transitioning from one role to another, creating and maintaining cultures as well as a tonne and of references to books and resources that has helped Stuart continue his learning journey and we started with Stuart explaining where he sees culture sitting in the construction area of a high performance environment.Show Notes: Jim Collins Book ‘Good To Great’ - https://amzn.to/38myPfxLeinster Rugby - https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/Leo Cullen - https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/staff/leo-cullen/Performance Clock - https://wgcoaching.com/the-performance-clock-the-most-important-concept-in-high-performance-sport/Kettlethorpe High School - https://kettlethorpehigh.co.uk/Andy Farrell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_FarrellGraham Rowntree - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_RowntreeSocial Identity Theory - https://www.simplypsychology.org/social-identity-theory.htmlDaryl Powell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_PowellSimon Middleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_MiddletonEngland Saxons - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_A_national_rugby_union_teamGuy Easterby - https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/staff/guy-easterby/Robin McBride - https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/staff/john-fogarty/Stuart Hooper - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_HooperPaul Sackey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_SackeyRussell Earnshaw - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_EarnshawWayne Bennett - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Bennett_(rugby_league)Alastair Clarkson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alastair_ClarksonFrancois Pienaar - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francois_PienaarEngland Cricket - https://www.ecb.co.uk/Queensland Reds - https://reds.rugby/Counties Manukau - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_Manukau_Rugby_Football_UnionSteve Jobs - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_JobsMatthew Syed Book 'Rebel Ideas’ - https://amzn.to/3kaByvoDavid Brailsford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_BrailsfordBritish Cycling - https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/Team Sky - https://www.ineosgrenadiers.com/article/team-sky-to-become-team-ineosMartin Glenn - https://www.thefa.com/news/2018/dec/13/martin-glenn-statement-131218Gareth Southgate - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gareth_SouthgateOther Book’s That Stuart Recommends:Bill Walsh - ’The Score Takes Care Of Itself’ - https://amzn.to/3vDNcV2John Wooden - 'Wooden On Leadership’ - https://amzn.to/3vHutHZRic Charlesworth - 'World’s Best’ - https://amzn.to/3K76tDmJohn C. John Sutherland Part 2 - The Best Leaders Understand They Don’t Have All The Answers

It's part two of my conversation with former Met Police Superintendent, John Sutherland. From sieges that shut down London, to the time he got things very wrong when communicating to his team and his own personal battle with his mental health, this is another cracking episode, and we pick up from where we left off, talking about Leadership and perhaps it’s most important trait.Show Notes: Jurgen Klopp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCrgen_KloppChief Superintendent - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_superintendentThe Siege Of London - https://bit.ly/37CKDtHTottenham Court Road - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tottenham_Court_RoadStephen Fry on mental health - https://bit.ly/3LZX1DfRuby Wax on mental health - https://bit.ly/3vcaOQjThe Body Keeps The Score book - https://amzn.to/3Egcwo1Mahatmu Gandhi Quote - https://bit.ly/3xjQnDNHugh Jackman on Tim Ferris - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-tim-ferriss-show/id863897795?i=1000480367239Shawshank Redemption - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hB3S9bIacoMark Kermode’s Book on the Shawshank Redemption - https://amzn.to/3jnk6U9Bruce Cockburn - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Cockburn Martin Luther King - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King_Jr.These Three Remain Quote - https://bit.ly/3xjR3cjMore About John Sutherland:Website - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/about/Media Agency - https://greeneheaton.co.uk/clients/john-sutherland/Twitter - @policecommander‘Blue’ book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r2qSCY‘Crossing The Line’ book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r5ceL7’The Siege’ book - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/the-siege/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibl3M4dTF2ULinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-sutherland-61994992/?originalSubdomain=ukListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

John Sutherland Part 1 - We Are More Than The Names That We Have And The Positions We Hold

John Sutherland joined the Met Police in 1992 after receiving the baton of honour, presented to the outstanding student during an officer’s basic training. He quickly rose through the ranks and as it says on the back cover of his first book 'Blue', experienced all that is extraordinary about a life in blue: saving lives, finding the lost, comforting the broken and helping taking the dangerous people off the streets. With the highs came the lows and in 2013 John suffered a major nervous breakdown and we talk about and how he’s managed to wrestle control back, later in the podcast.A third book and his first in the fiction category 'The Siege' is on its way, straddling his second book 'Crossing The Line' and before getting into subjects like hostage negotiation, the art of listening and the reason for becoming a policeman in the first place, we spoke about why he started writing and the routines around that.Show Notes: Jose Mourinho - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_MourinhoJurgen Klopp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCrgen_Klopp‘Blue’ book -  https://amzn.to/3r2qSCY‘Crossing The Line’ book - https://amzn.to/3r5ceL7’The Siege’ book - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/the-siege/Ben’s book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1474608272/Tom Fordyce - https://twitter.com/tomfordyce?lang=enJim Kwik's book ‘Limitless’ - https://amzn.to/37neYN6Damascus Road - https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/road+to+DamascusHammersmith Broadway -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammersmith_BroadwayLancashire Police - https://www.lancashire.police.uk/Ben’s Olympic Gold Medal - https://www.sportsjoe.ie/rugby/ben-ryan-fiji-olympic-sevens-rugby-187712The Shawshank Redemption Film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmzuHjWmXOcAndy Millburn Podcast Episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216?i=1000552662688Boston Consultancy Group - https://www.bcg.com/en-gb/Dog Day Afternoon Film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3STmwLDDBcIPhil Williams Head of Scotland Yard Hostage Unit - https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-williams-30242363/?originalSubdomain=ukChinese Symbol For Listening - https://rwwleadership.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/the-chinese-symbol-for-listening/  More About John Sutherland:Website - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/about/Media Agency - https://greeneheaton.co.uk/clients/john-sutherland/Twitter - @policecommander‘Blue’ book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r2qSCY‘Crossing The Line’ book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r5ceL7’The Siege’ book - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/the-siege/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibl3M4dTF2ULinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-sutherland-61994992/?originalSubdomain=ukListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Laurence Halsted - Seeing The Person Behind The Athlete Is Essential

My guest this week questions the idea of what success is and how most people can look at sport and life in a very different way.Laurence Halsted is a double-Olympian, a fencer who achieved European medals as well helping to take the GB fencing programme from amateur to professional and qualify for an Olympics in the team event for the first time in the modern era. He’s a former performance director for the Danish Fencing Federation and now Director of Mentoring at The True Athlete Project as well as a performance consultant and coach. This podcast turns into a fascinating conversation that evolves around topics such as mentoring, dealing with failure and doubt, life balance and the power of positive relationships, but we start with the idea of self-compassion.Show Notes: Deloitte - https://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/explore/home.htmlKatie Warriner - https://www.theprimeclinic.co.uk/katie-warriner-psychologistSteve Peters - https://chimpmanagement.com/professor-steve-peters/London 2012 - https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/london-2012Rio 2016 - https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/rio-2016Team Denmark - https://www.dif.dk/Percy Cerutty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_CeruttyHerb Elliott - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_ElliottFiji Sevens Rugby Team - https://www.fijirugby.com/teams/national-7s/fijii-7s/Sigatoka Sand Dunes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigatoka_Sand_DunesChris Skelley Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-25-chris-skelley/Owen Eastwood Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-14-owen-eastwood/The Second Arrow Buddhist Parable - https://mindfulnessmeditation.net.au/arrow/More About Laurence Halsted:Personal Website - https://www.laurencehalsted.com/The True Athlete Project Website - https://www.thetrueathleteproject.org/TeamGB Website - https://www.teamgb.com/athlete/laurence-halsted/41H6AKeLqla6fzkNgslUthBook on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3JNaJbTTwitter - https://twitter.com/laurencehalstedFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/laurence.halsted/photosLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3DlWgRFWikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurence_HalstedListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

In part two of my discussion with Craig White we go into Transcendental Meditation, centering, flow states, the roles of breath, sound, touch and movement and much, much more, but we start by talking about Embodied Learning - what it means, and how it works, as well as the sensation we’ve all felt, our gut feeling.Show Notes: Alan Watts - https://www.youtube.com/c/AlanWattsOrg/videos James Haskell Podcast episode with Craig - https://apple.co/3CKiKeLNLP - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programmingOsea Kolinisau Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-15-osea-kolinisau/Men Without Masks E-book - https://www.menwithoutmasks.com/blogMore About Craig White:Website - https://www.craigwhitementoring.com/Men Without Masks Website - https://www.menwithoutmasks.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/craigwhitementoring/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/cw_mentoringLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-white-737087a/?originalSubdomain=ukListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Craig White Part 1 - Confusion Always Precedes New Learning

Craig White's credentials in rugby are impeccable. Roles at Wasps, Ireland, Wales, The British and Irish Lions as well as his journey with the Uruguay team at the last Rugby World Cup, fill his CV. He started in strength and conditioning but has added so much more at places like Bolton Wanderers Football Club, where he acted as consultant to manager Sam Alladyce.Relating to the Bolton part of his life, there is some swearing in this section of the podcast. We don’t usually include swearing as we know the podcast is consumed by listeners of all ages, but in this instance we felt it added value and was essential to one of the funnier stories in the programme, so we hope you don’t mind too much.Part one is mainly about Craig's journey and we touch on subjects like pain, character, rapport, feedback and serving people, whilst in part two we go deeper into some of the specific tools and techniques he uses, but we start with his upbringing and how that informed his path from an early age.Show Notes: Rugby League - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_leagueWaterloo Rugby Team - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo_F.C.The Alchemist Book by Paulo Coelho - https://amzn.to/3MuMdhdHod Carrier - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brick_hodJohn Demartini - https://drdemartini.comWarren Buffet - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_BuffettRichard Branson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_BransonIreland Rugby - https://www.irishrugby.ie/Lansdowne Road - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lansdowne_RoadAFC Wimbledon - https://www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/Jerk Chicken - https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/jerk_chicken/Sale RFC - https://www.salesharks.com/Bolton Wanderers Football Club - https://www.bwfc.co.uk/Sam Allardyce - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_AllardycePhil Brown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Brown_(footballer,_born_1959)Wasps Rugby Club - https://www.wasps.co.uk/Warren Gatland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_GatlandLawrence Dallaglio - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_DallaglioShaun Edwards - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_Edwards Paul Stridgeon - https://www.wru.wales/staff/paul-stridgeon/Dave Haddfield - https://coachscompanion.com/dave-hadfield/Leicester Rugby Club - https://www.leicestertigers.com/Austin Swain Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-6-austin-swain-part-1/2005 & 2009 British & Irish Lions Tours - https://www.lionsrugby.com/2019 Rugby World Cup - https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/2019/Uruguay Rugby - https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/2019/teams/uruguayMantra - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MantraMore About Craig White:Website - https://www.craigwhitementoring.com/Men Without Masks Website - https://www.menwithoutmasks.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/craigwhitementoring/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/cw_mentoringLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-white-737087a/?originalSubdomain=ukShow Notes - Listen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Andrew Milburn - Nine Times Out Of Ten Your Gut Is Right

Andrew Milburn retired from the US Marine Corps in 2019 and has since gone on to write the highly acclaimed memoir ‘When The Tempest Gathers: A Marine Special Operations Commander At War’. As an infantry and special operations officer, Andy has had operational command at every rank which included leading the multinational special operations task force given the mission of defeating ISIS in Iraq. This has obviously led to some very dangerous situations and from all his experiences, he shares with me what he thinks are some of the key skills and attributes needed to be an effective leader, as well as the culture that needs to be created. How the small accumulation of dropping of standards or turning a blind eye leads to disaster and much much more. This conversation was recorded before the Russian invasion of Ukraine but, a lot of what Andy talks about is directly actionable, especially with how President Zelensky is conducting himself, facing his very own and very real tempest, but, having been educated at St Pauls school in Hammersmith and University College London, my first question was how he ended up in the US Marine Corps in the first place.More About Andy Milburn:Book - https://amzn.to/3vq9lrnIrregular War Podcast - https://bit.ly/3hvO4nWTwitter - https://twitter.com/andymilburn8LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewmilburn2020/Show Notes: Aiden McCullen Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-22-aidan-mccullen/Aidan McCullen Innovation Show Podcast - https://theinnovationshow.io/about/Boarding School Syndrome book - https://amzn.to/3C7ZJ5YEvelyn Waugh - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evelyn_WaughBoy George - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_GeorgeSomalia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mogadishu_(1993)Task Force Ranger - https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_of_Mogadishu_(1993)Marionette - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MarionettePavlovian - https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/PavlovianMy Lai massacre - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%E1%BB%B9_Lai_massacreHaditha massacre - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haditha_massacreFull Metal Jacket - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Metal_JacketMali incident - https://abcn.ws/3McTJx8George Orwell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_OrwellWinston Churchill - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_ChurchillChurchill’s Chief of Staff - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Brooke,_1st_Viscount_AlanbrookeListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Wendy Searle - Just Get Out The Door

This week's podcast comes from one of the most inhospitable but beautiful places on earth as we chat to explorer, Wendy Searle.A mother of four with a busy job, Wendy wanted to show others that extraordinary is available to everyone. She is the seventh woman and fourth fastest in history to ski solo and unassisted from the coastline of Antartica to the South Pole. The 715 mile route took her 42 days, she fell over every day, lost 12kg in bodyweight, had moments of pure elation and moments of pure devastatio, but through it all, she never had a single day off and kept her mantra ’stop crying and start skiing’ close to hand.It was a really refreshing chat with Wendy. She doesn’t come from a very sporty background. No high level sporting success on her CV and she has never been part of a high performance programme, in a traditional way. Its all come from her drive and her purity of purpose. We talk planning and logistics, getting up early, dealing with sastrugi’s and skiing through whiteout’s, as well as just being able to deal with the enormity of the challenge and all the curve balls it throws at you without anyone else’s help. And we started with the question “Why did you attempt this?”More About Wendy Searle:Website - https://southpole2020.com/Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/user-312058116Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/betweensnowandsky/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/betweensnowskyLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendy-searle-91262470/Show Notes - Show Notes: Sastrugi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SastrugiPollyanna - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollyanna_(1960_film)Percy Cerutty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_CeruttyRobert Scott - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Falcon_ScottErnest Shackleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton Shackleton Family Motto - Fortitudine Vincimus ‘by endurance we conquer'Maya Angelou - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Angelou Atomic Habits book - https://amzn.to/3H8TwYXMarshmallow Test - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQLiz McColgan Podcast Episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216?i=1000528074743Audible - https://adbl.co/3AFgswKThe Secret Barrister book - https://amzn.to/3o4yiE3Ben McIntyre Rogue Heroes book - https://amzn.to/3G7trbADavid Mitchell book - https://amzn.to/3r2Pzj4 / https://amzn.to/3u5NWTKPunta Arenas in Chile - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punta_Arenas Union Glacier Logistics Base - https://antarctic-logistics.com/camp/union-glacier-camp/British Cycling Innovation - Listen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Marcus Daniell - There's A Relationship Between Rest And Pushing Too Hard

This week's guest is professional tennis player, Olympic medallist and founder of the brilliant High Impact Athletes organisation, New Zealander, Marcus Daniell. The chat you're about to hear is a very honest one from someone who's learnt so much from the journey he has taken. It's easy to think that being a professional athlete means that, not only do you know everything about preparation and performance, but that you also have an entourage around you to help and guide you. For the huge majority of those that make a living playing sport professionally, there is no full time support group and they are often doing the majority of their work on their own. Being self-sufficient is something we talk a lot about and how you can become more self-reliant and pro active. Going to an Olympic Games and how being part of a bigger group really added value for him and we expand upon the mistakes he has made and the learnings from it all. Away from the court the obvious drive that Marcus has, propelled him into starting up an organisation called High Impact Athletes, which aims to assist sports people with charitable giving and that’s a rich part of the diet of topics that we touch upon this week, but we start with how he had to chose, at a pretty early age, between tennis and football, two sports he was playing at international level.More About Marcus Daniell:High Impact Athletes Website - https://highimpactathletes.org/teamWikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_DaniellATP Profile - https://www.atptour.com/en/players/marcus-daniell/d763/overviewInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/marcusdaniellnz/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/marcusdaniellLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3swYzwuShow Notes - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/Show Notes: Banská Bystrica in Slovakia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bansk%C3%A1_BystricaMichael Bourne - https://bit.ly/3sKzePuLTA - https://www.lta.org.uk/Owen Eastwood Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-14-owen-eastwood/Mike Venus - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Venus_(tennis)David Sammel - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_SammelHaka - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HakaPounamu Stone - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PounamuMana - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ManaArthur Ashe Humanitarian Award - https://bit.ly/34YR3lzHigh Impact Athletes - https://highimpactathletes.org/Effective Altruism - https://www.effectivealtruism.org/80,000 Hours Website - https://bit.ly/3HJaHAPMaslow’s Hierarchy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needsAtmosfair - https://www.atmosfair.de/en/Clean Air Task Force - https://www.catf.us/Carbon 180 - https://carbon180.org/Cool Earth - https://bit.ly/3uDwjeb'The Life You Can Save' book by Peter Singer - https://amzn.to/3Ll70DH'Stranger In A Strange Land' book by Robert Heinlein - https://amzn.to/34pPkGoListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen’s Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Allistair McCaw - You Can't Give Energy, If You Don't Have Energy

So, It’s series three and for my first guest of the re-branded 'Culture & Performance Podcast' I thought it would great to kick off with a best-selling author and speaker and someone who’s recognised as one of the world's foremost figures in leadership, team culture and performance, Allistair McCaw.For over 25 years Allistair has worked with some of the most successful people, teams, colleges and organisations in the world. We first met when we were both presenting at a conference for Paris St Germain FC , we struck up a conversation and have continued to swap notes ever since. We used his most recent book ‘Lead with Purpose, Make An Impact’ as the framework for this discussion. He’s given us 44 different stop off points to consider what impacts on our leadership and performance environment. It was a good way to prop up our conversation and covered subjecta like, how you deal with the tough conversations, managing your energy and burn out, routines and the idea of “countback” as well many other stories and tools.I was late getting on the call to Alistair in California as my wi-fi was playing up so it seemed apt to start the chat around what he thought about timings.More About Allistair McCaw:Website - https://www.allistairmccaw.com/Podcast - https://www.allistairmccaw.com/podcastBooks - https://www.allistairmccaw.com/booksInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/bechampionminded/Twitter - https://twitter.com/AllistairMcCawLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/allistair-mccaw-552a0a89/Show Notes - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/Listen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/3B3c8HKSpotify - https://spoti.fi/3HGk8knAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0CkShow Notes:Vince Lombardi - https://bit.ly/3ssjWyGSir Alex Fergusson - https://bit.ly/3gsM1k5Stephen Gerrard - https://bit.ly/3J687VEGeorge Raveling - https://bit.ly/3HR3leJNick Bollittieri - https://bit.ly/3ssQatARalph Ragnick - https://bit.ly/3LiCytKJürgen Klopp - https://bit.ly/3oxVqLxBrendan Rogers - https://bit.ly/3J2RGcOPhil Neville - https://bit.ly/3uDpnh1Graham Henry - https://bit.ly/3JhRmXTTana Umaga - https://bit.ly/3GyWc16Oprah Winfrey - https://bit.ly/3rABtFZCoach K - https://bit.ly/3HzZ8vyPep Guardiola - https://bit.ly/3sooshUEddie Jones - https://bit.ly/3B5I7XAErwin Valencia Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-4-erwin-valencia/Marcelo Bielsa - https://bit.ly/3slXOGpBrentford FC - https://www.brentfordfc.com/Thomas Frank - https://bit.ly/3gNjC8BMatt Benham - https://bit.ly/3ssGqQ8\Rasmus Ankerson - https://www.rasmusankersen.com/Owen Eastwood Podcast Episode - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-14-owen-eastwood/Rita Pearson TED Talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFnMTHhKdkw

Martin Buccheit & George Perry - Learning What Not To Do, Is As Important As Knowing What To Do

It's two for the price of one on this week's podcast as I'm joined by two world-class operators. The first, Martin Buchheit, I have known and worked alongside in a Nike research and innovation group for the past five years. Until recently, he was head of performance at PSG FC, from the outside at least, one of the best jobs in football. Martin’s now working for Kitman labs, a company using analytics research to help sports teams find out what works and what doesn’t and also in a part time capacity at Lille Football Club and he’s also just released a book called EGOals, which talks about all things ego and really is an ego playbook for high performance workplaces. His co-writer, George Perry, is my other guest. George has worked for the US Navy as an officer and now coaches in track and field in the United States and you’ll hear in this conversation how ego was integral to the ultimate path that George took with regard to his line of work. Through their collective experiences they are authorities to talk about ego and we also discuss the stories and thoughts of many of the world-class practitioners that have also contributed to the book and that come from some of the most well know sports teams and organisations on the planet. I too was delighted to be able to contribute some of my experiences around ego, including my own, but we started the conversation with me asking them both of them how they would firstly describe what ego is. Chris Skelley - Keep Moving Forward, Keep Staying Positive

For today's show it's the irrepresible Chris Skelley. Only a couple of months ago he won Judo gold in the visually impared under 100kg category at the Paralympics in Tokyo. He's also a European and World Champion. Chris grew up playing rugby and competing in Judo from the age of five, but in his teenage years his sight began to suffer due to Ocular Albinism and that led to a huge change in his life, in every area. We talk about that and how it's fuelled his positivity and fashioned the path he's on now. Styles of learning, understanding the individual, trust between coach and athlete all crop up in what both turned out to be a heart-warming, inspiring and light-hearted conversation and we started by talking about the aftermath of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Chris missing out on a podium finish and how that threw even more coals on his fire of further development. Aidan McCullen Part 3 - Leaders Need To Be More Like Coaches

Today’s show its the last in a three-part series with former rugby player Aidan McCullen who these days is an executive coach, host of the weekly podcast, the ‘Innovation Show’ and author of new book ‘Undisruptable’. Last week we talked about discipline versus talent, manifestation and positive thinking as well as his own very successful professional playing career and how that has helped shape a lot of his current thinking. This week we get into subjects like feedback, both giving and receiving it, communication, mentoring and teaching yourself to be open to a reinvention mindset and what that actually means, but we start today’s show talking about failure and using the Japanese idea of Kintsugi thinking. Aidan McCullen Part 2 - There’s Nothing In A Caterpillar, That Tells You It’s Going To Be A Butterfly

Today’s show is the second of a three-part series with former rugby player, turned exec coach, podcaster and writer, Aidan McCullen. Last week we talked about nutrition and breathing and how he is ever-evolving as a father and husband by learning new things each week and this week we discuss Aidan’s playing career, from being capped with Ireland, Leinster, his arrival in France with first Dax and then his dream club, Toulouse before finishing his career in England with London Irish. He’s so good to chat too and in this episode we cover topics such as discipline vs talent, manifestation, which I’m a big believer in and the role of mentors which is also something we delve even deeper into next week in the third and final part, but we started by Aidan talking about one of the great minds of the 20th century. Aidan McCullen Part 1 - If It Takes Slower To Get There, It’ll Last Longer

Aidan McCullen played professional rugby for over a decade, including huge clubs like Leinster and Toulouse and was capped by Ireland too, but since his playing days he has transformed himself into one of life’s great learners and communicators. From hosting his own amazing podcast 'The Innovation Show', which is listened to by none other than Bill Gates, to lecturing, coaching executives and writing his first book, Undisruptable, we dip into lessons learnt from all of those facets of his life as well as his role as father to his two young sons, which you’ll hear has been informative in more ways than one, but we start with a question that Aidan has recently started to ask himself. Alice Dearing - You Thrive When Surrounded By Good People

For today’s show, I chat to an athlete who's just returned from her first Olympic Games , open water swimmer, Alice Dearing. When we met in a small park in Camberley in the south of England, she was still unpacking all of what she’s been through from being part of the hugely successful team GB to her first Olympic final and how she would approach it again. It was fascinating to listen to her talk about all of that, how she deals with the ridiculously early morning training and volume as well as the sheer danger involved in swimming in open water. Alice is also Great Britain’s first female black swimmer and we talk about that as we close our chat but we start with me asking her how she’s dealing with her time off and not being in a strict regime.

Tom Mitchell Part 2 - How Putting Your Plate Away Can Lead To The Team Scoring More Goals

It’s the second part of the chat I had, walking through Richmond Park in South London, with Olympic Silver Medallist and England and Team GB Rugby Sevens Captain at both the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games, Tom Mitchell. We discuss building values from day one, putting time into relationships, confidence and lack of it and life after professional sport, but we started by speaking about how do you convince an athlete that filling in a questionnaire or turning up on time for a meeting is eventually going to help you win the game or win the tournament. Tom Mitchell Part 1 - Excitement And Fear Walk The Path Hand-In-Hand

Tom Mitchell, Olympic Silver Medallist and England and Team GB Rugby Sevens Captain at both the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games is this week's guest. It really was a great conversation and having originally given Tom his international debut when I coached him with England, we had well over a decade of collective experiences to unravel and explore. Recorded during a sunny walk through Richmond Park in South London, Tom talks about his return from the Tokyo Olympics and missing out on a medal after claiming silver in Rio five years earlier, Injuries, disappointments and more. We really get stuck into his leadership and the style he prefers both giving and receiving as well as tools he uses to stay present and be as authentic as he can, but we started with his views on mindfullness after he posted a series of stories about the subject on Instagram. Jeremy Snape - There's A Lot Of Things You Can Do If Your Radar's Up

As a cricketer, Jeremy Snape achieved international honours with England as well as captaining county side Leicestershire, but it’s perhaps for his work in sports performance that he’s best known for these days. Post playing career Jeremy founded Sporting Edge, a company specialising in inspiring individuals, leaders and teams to deliver their best and this was the crux of the conversation when we met. Jeremy was great company and his wealth of experience energised the conversation. We had a fascinating chat covering so many topics within performance, narrowing in on the mental side, through to the performance of teams, athletes and managing Mavericks, but we started by talking about selflessness and as the perfect example, a group called the ‘Rivonia 8’ the name given to those that were sentenced alongside Nelson Mandela, to serve a large part of their lives in prison on Robben Island. Joe De Sena - Nothing Good Happens After 11pm

Joe De Sena is a force of nature. I first became aware of Joe through podcasts like The Tim Ferris Show and Rich Roll and decided to reach out. Joe's story on those podcasts was one of starting out with very little and how a drive to change 100 million people’s lives pushed him on to found Spartan, which now has over 250 races in over forty two countries and with his recent acquisition of Tough Mudder, those stats are only going up. We only scratch the surface in this episode around his early years and his pool cleaning business where his first clients were mob bosses and I’d advise you to check out the aforementioned podcasts for more details on that part of his life, but in this conversation we focus on mindset, different ways to train, breaking bad habits and even the reasons behind why he ran up Scottish glens with weights and a bag-piper trailing behind him! We start though with with a story about Fiji and his first encounter with rugby, probably why one of the world’s busiest and energetic people agreed to have this fantastic chat. Kelly Sotherton - Throw Positive Thoughts Out And They'll Come Back Somewhere

As a heptathlete, Kelly Sotherton had huge success. A triple Olympic medalist, Commonwealth Games gold medalist and with European and world medals. But some of her medals came years and years after she actually competed as the result of some of her opponents failing drug tests retrospectively. We talk about that and her next chapters now, as a coach, as a team leader for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Kelly doesn’t hold back and I find that so refreshing. She says what she thinks and it comes from a place of wanting her sport to be in a better place and I think everyone listening to this will get some great nuggets to take away as well as just enjoy her humour, her storytelling and her wisdom. We start with Kelly telling me how she swapped her coach, bringing in the formidable dutch mentor Charles van Commenee a year before the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Osea Kolinisau - When You Don't Have Much, You Help Each Other Out

Former Fiji sevens captain and my great friend, Osea Kolinisau, or Oscar, as he is known in rugby, is this week's star guest. Flag bearer for Fiji at the Rio Olympics, when Fiji won their countries first ever Olympic gold medal, he’s one of the most successful sevens players in the history of the game. Our relationship was more than just coach and captain. He helped navigate me in my early days in the pacific and we relied on each other on and off the training field. We really dig into that relationship between coach and player and trust and belonging are wrapped up in all of that. Towards the end of our conversation you’ll hear Sonny, Oscar’s young son in the background, which re-inforced what we had spoken about earlier in the podcast about the importance of family and we begin in a similar vein with Osea telling me how a crucial moment happened early in career that really defined everything that followed. Owen Eastwood - Belonging

Owen Eastwood is a performance consultant who’s book ‘Belonging’ I devoured recently. Topping the charts in his native New Zealand, it’s crammed full of story-telling and take-home messages. I would read a few pages, then reflect on my own work and career and drift off into thought and feelings. It’s such a good read. Owen has worked with some of the very best teams and organisations both in the UK and abroad. Of Maori descent, that’s also a driver that’s fuelled his thinking around purpose, leadership, role models, success and much more. For the last five years he’s been a consultant to Gareth Southgate’s England team as well as recently consulting with the new Premiership Rugby Champions, Harlequins and thee are stories about those teams as well as many more examples along the way. I drove across to his offices in the Cotswolds really excited for the conversation I was going to have. The book gave me plenty of starting points, but also through conversations we've had previously, I knew this would be a really rich and thought provoking chat. As the title of his book, we started our chat around belonging, something that he wraps a lot of his work around. Cath Bishop - There's More Than A Medal At Stake

Ex-International Rower Cath Bishop won World Titles and has been to three Olympics including the 2004 games in Athens where she won a silver, but results are not what she would like to be judged or defined by. In fact, just starting her introduction as “ex-international rower” already wrongly labels what she is about. In her terrific book, The Long Win, Cath looks at winning from a longer term view and this conversation opens up many questions around what really defines success. Cath’s three C’s of Clarity, Constant Learning and Connection form some of the framework around our chat, but also her experiences as an athlete in a high performance programme and in her career as a diplomat, working in conflict affected parts of the world. Is it all about coming first, winning that gold, delivering that tournament title or should we be putting far more emphasis and understanding around the longer term? We chatted in Cath’s garden on a beautiful blue-skied day and opened it all up with Cath posing me the first question around re-framing a gold medal. Liz McColgan - Everyone Is An Individual

Series 2 kicks off with Olympian and former world champion athlete, Liz McColgan. Liz had a glittering career in athletics on both the track, in the 10,000m and the road, in the marathon. On top of world titles, she’s also a double olympian, double commonwealth champion and multiple marathon winner. In fact her story around her debut marathon, coming straight off a track season with no Marathon training to go out and win the New York marathon is a must listen coming up. From her early days growing up and the hurdles she overcame to succeed, to her coaching herself in her crowning achievements and training in a sauna in Scotland is all on its way! We also talk drug use in sport and the grey areas around technology creeping in as well. She is now a coach to others, including her daughter Eilish, a world class athlete too and on her way to the Tokyo Olympics as we speak. It’s a great listen and we start with her own origin story and those first experiences of competitive running. Series 1 Review

Welcome back to the podcast where this week I take a look back over series one with the help of my partner, TV presenter Michelle Ackerley. It’s been a fantastic start to the podcast and over the course of the past ten week's we've heard from one of the stars of the Peter Crouch Podcast, Tom Fordyce, sprint coach, Margot Wells, sport psychologist, Dr Austin Swain, Fiji rugby player, Nemani Nadolo, New York Knicks performance leader, Erwin Valencia, Andy Murray's strength and conditioning coach, Matt Little, long-time coach of Jessica Ennis-Hill, Tony Minichiello, eye specialist Dr Sherylle Calder and special forces, turned England sevens star, turned entrepreneur, Greg Barden. It really has been a brilliant first series and over the course of this review we pick out some of our favourite moments, discuss what we’ve both learnt as well as expanding the chat out to topics such as working in the media, lessons for life in general and we also briefly look ahead to series 2 in July and tease who some of my next guests will be. Greg Barden - 'Life Isn't Black And White'

Greg Barden was the youngest to ever pass Special Forces Selection and his journey from the Special Boat Service to England Sevens and company founder is as inspirational as it is interesting. This was the first time we met each other since we parted ways badly with England Sevens, me as the coach and Greg as the captain. It really was great to see Greg again and something we should have done a long time ago. He has not only done some truly amazing things in his life so far, but he also talks about them so brilliantly and reflects deeply and with real insight. Certainly, it was very cathartic to talk about how we fell out but it also left me with some mixed emotions. I was genuinely elated to have had that difficult conversation but also disappointed in myself that I had been like that with him all those years ago and not had the tools to mend it quickly. I put those softer skills right at the top of what I think I am very good at but the ego, twinned with the pressure I had put on myself back then, produced a Ben Ryan that was certainly not his best version! I think those dips in my best version were pretty rare but still, as I say to a lot of the coaches and players I have worked with, you can be 99% brilliant in how you deal with someone but one badly placed comment, just as in this case, can destroy all the good work you have built up. Dr Sherylle Calder - 'Little Things Make A Big Difference'

My guest this week is Dr. Sherylle Calder. Sherylle was part of the staff that helped South Africa win the Rugby World Cup in 2007, having won the same tournament four years earlier in Australia with England. She's also worked in many other sports including Football, Cricket, NFL and Formula One and has also worked on an individual basis with some of the world's best athletes, such as Open Golf Champion, Ernie Els. Her specialism, that she discovered as a young international hockey player, centres around vision and improving all aspects of that, not just with elite athletes, but also young children and CEO’s. We talked about embracing natural talent, seeing the whole picture, sifting what information is useful and what isn’t, critical non-essentials and the effect of mobile phones on elite sport and life in general. Its another one of those episodes where we cross into many different sports and skills and it was fascinating to hear from someone that has gone deep on one very particular skill and how that can influence so many other areas. After chatting to Sherylle, I got straight onto her eye gym. It's a lot of fun and her website, eyegym.com is the best place to find out more about what Sherylle does and reach out to her and her team. Austin Swain Part 2 - 'What Got You There, Won't Get You There'

If you have listened to last weeks episode then you would have heard leading psychologist, Dr Austin Swain, talk about coping with pressure, confidence, psychological safety and a whole lot more. We continue that conversation in this week’s show as we jump into the world of business and work-life, from a leadership point of view, but also the different styles of leadership and new ways of working, communicating and avoiding burnout. From stories of the battle between Coco-cola and Pepsi, to bringing values to life, adapting to a new role and the idea from one of the greatest-ever TED talks that “every contact leaves a trace', we’re going deep! I also bring some of this back to sport with recollections from my own career, but also remember - the vehicles we use to tell these stories might be relevant to Austin or me but like so much of our learning , we can use these ideas to morph into our own world’s and thoughts. Whether we realise it or not, we all use a form of performance psychology in our everyday lives to varying degrees. It might be a simple moment of appreciation to someone you work with that lifts their esteem and reinforces positive behaviours or it could be in performing the role of mentor, but we start today’s chat around the subject of feedback - giving it, receiving it and it’s importance in any high-performing structure. Austin Swain Part 1 - 'High Performing Teams Disagree Well'

Dr Austin Swain is one of the co-founders of Lane 4, experts in organisational performance that have a 25 year track record of world-class and ground breaking delivery. He was England Rugby’s first Sports Psychologist and has worked with many top-end professional sports teams and athletes, but he’s also spent a huge amount of his career in the corporate sector too. I have known Austin since my student undergraduate days at Loughborough University when I attended his Sport Psychology lectures. Much of my coaching success has been grounded in my man-management and those softer skills to what I would now call, creating an environment of Psychological Safety and It was Austin's dulcet tones and engaging way that inspired me and sent me on a life-long learning journey around leadership, management and performance. This discussion had so much in it that we have decided to make it a two-parter. This first part starts with Austin beginning to discuss how we all deal with pressure. Matt Little - 'How Hard Is A Hard Day?'

If you watch tennis, you might recognise his face. You aren't sure what he does but you see him at the Grand Slam events as the cameras pivot to the players team and families seating. Maybe in the short video played before Andy Murray, Britain’s greatest ever tennis player, comes onto centre court at Wimbledon, you see him on the same practice court chatting to Andy as he then disappears into the locker room. Matt Little is a world renowned coach and he has been Andy Murray’s strength and conditioning trainer since 2007. In that time, so much has had to be faced. The joy of Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold, the despair of career-threatening injuries to Andy that didn’t seem like they would ever shift. If you need reminding how fragile an athlete’s career can be and how they need those around them help them through those moments then this interview is probably it. I met Matt when we were allowed to meet outdoors socially distanced , so you will hear our conversation occasionally accompanied by the sound of the wildlife in Richmond Park, London. With that backdrop we discussed the importance of setting values, experience, loyalty, listening to learn, data and other key topics around performance and culture and started with Matt telling a story about when he was based at Loughborough University, one of the worlds great sporting institutions. Erwin Valencia - 'Just Do You'

We go stateside this week and talk to Erwin Benedict Valencia or simply ‘E’. I have know Erwin since 2016 when we met in New York City in his role working in Basketball and we’ve been good friends ever since. I would regard him as a polymath, hugely competent in many different and diverse domains. At the last count he had over 30 letters after his name but that really is just a by product of who he is. He grew up in the Philippines but moved around a fair bit as a kid before getting his first break working in professional sport with the Pittsburg Pirates in Major League Baseball. From there he went into professional basketball where he remains today. He's widely sought for his views and skills and the athletes he works with benefit hugely from his continuous learning, his curiosity and his positivity. During this chat, we touch on resilience, recovery, over-training, mindfulness, meditation, breathing, manifestation and positive psychology. For this episode there is a tonne of links to the topics we talked about in the episode show notes which can be found at benryan.co.uk/podcasts More About Erwin Valencia: Website - https://erwinvalencia.com/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4J6ic3GGNbKnFp6u3Ofn2w Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/erwinbvalencia/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/erwinbvalencia?lang=en Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ekinetiq/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/erwinbvalencia/ Show Notes - benryan.co.uk/podcasts Listen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast: Ben’s Website - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/ Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQ Amazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnO TuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsm Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSit Follow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7o Follow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8Ftv Read about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Nemani Nadolo - 'It Never Starts With Rugby'

From his beginnings in Sigatoka ‘Rugby Town’ in Fiji, to gracing every top professional league in the world, rugby superstar, Nemani Nadolo’s story is an engaging one. One of the world's best Rugby Union wingers in the last twenty years, it’s not been a straight path to his many achievements and honours. Indeed at one stage it looked like Nemani might not have a career in rugby at all, but thoughts of lucrative work in the mining industry soon turned to following his passion and eventually lighting it up at a Rugby World Cup. It’s a story full of takeaways and cognisance. I met Nemani, pre covid in a park in Oadby, Leicestershire, shortly after he had signed to play for the Leicester Tigers in the Gallagher Premiership. As the lawn mowers buzzed in the background, we spoke about the importance of understanding the individual, controlling your ego and a whole lot more. This became an emotional chat and I thank Nemani for opening up to me. It was also a conversation I wanted to have early in The BenRyan Podcast as he was one of the first people I reached out to for advice when I began my time in Fiji. Just chatting to Nemz in a place thousands of miles away from the south pacific, instantly reminded me of the warmth of the Fijian people and the importance of family and relationships. To get the best out of anyone, first, you listen and then you learn. Margot Wells - 'Bring Me The Right Head, I’ll Give You The Body'

Welcome to another show where each week I'm joined by some brilliant minds that deliver their take on what they think really makes the difference in performance. My second guest on the #benryanpodcast is Margot Wells, one of the great unsung heroes, but not by the many international sportsmen and women who have benefited hugely from her talents and expertise. Her personal performance journey began as an International sprinter back in Scotland in the 1970’s before she took on the task of coaching her husband, Alan Wells, to the 100m Olympic Gold Medal at the 1980 Moscow games. In those subsequent years, she has worked across a whole spectrum of sports and athletes to make them more powerful and make them run faster. If you would like to know more about Margot than pop across to her website at wellfast.co.uk and its also where you contact her directly too. I met Margot, before Covid restrictions kicked in, on a wet evening down at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. In the stand at the running track she calls her second home we had a conversation I will remember for a long time. Just like the speedball she uses so much as a training tool, she neither holds back her punches or minces her words. Open your mind, listen to our conversation and enjoy the honesty and rawness she brings and I hope you love this as much as I did. Setting The Scene With Tom Fordyce

Welcome to my new podcast where each week I’ll be joined by leading coaches, athletes and educators from the world of sport and far beyond. On each episode I’ll go through my guests journey, their stories and compare with my own experiences coaching at the elite level, to pull out some greats tips and useful advice around all things performance and that often mentioned, but misunderstood word, culture. Currently I consult with some of the biggest sporting and corporate organisations in the world from Premier League Football teams to American Sporting institutions, but I’m probably best known for coaching the Fiji national rugby sevens team to world titles and the country’s first ever Olympic medal, a gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Of course I’ll draw on that amazing journey but also on the lessons I’ve learnt and the principles I’ve forged over the last 20 years working in professional sport - and that’s really what inspired me to star this podcast. I wanted to swap notes, glean tips and talk performance with some some amazing people. Writer and broadcaster Tom Fordyce is my first guest. We actually went to Cambridge University at the same time, but it wasn’t until my role coaching the England Rugby sevens team that our paths properly crossed. Tom was working as BBC Chief Sports writer, a job that he held for over 20 years and we’ve been friends ever since. Currently he stars in the extremely popular Peter Crouch Podcast and has now set up his own podcast network (https://crowdnetwork.co.uk) which includes shows like Death of a Sports Star, Death of a Rock Star and new show, We Didn’t Start The Fire - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/we-didnt-start-the-fire/id1549243765. Tom actually ghost-wrote my book, Sevens Heaven and he’s also written many other great sports biographies. As I’ve said, in future weeks I’ll be joined by guests to find the signals that have propelled their own careers, but for this episode, Tom was good enough to help me explore some of the subjects that will come up over the course of this programme, from star players, enjoyment, managing egos, my concept of guardrails, experience, culture, use of technology and much, much more. I hope you enjoy… More About Tom Fordyce: Twitter - @tomfordyce Peter Crouch Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/that-peter-crouch-podcast/id1436030381 Show Notes & Transcript - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/episode-1-tom-fordyce/ Listen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast: Ben’s Website - https://benryan.co.uk/podcast/ Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQ Amazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnO Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSit Follow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7o Follow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8Ftv Read about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck
