After attending a memorial service for a long time friend, who was an incredible upland hunter and top shelf friend, I reconnected with a bunch of friends that I haven't seen in quite sometime. So of course we hung out and turned on the recorder!

Brent grew up in rural Arkansas in a time when quail were plenty and so were places to chase them. Duck hunting replaced the uplands and now he finds himself lighting up the treetops in search of ring-tailed bandits. 

Alex peacock joins me to talk about the causes and p[ossible fixes for two of the most common and undesirable traits in the K-9 world. Alex is a dog trainer that works with dogs those problems everyday. We can all learn something from this one!

Jennifer is a one of a kind. She owns Quinebaug Kennels. QK is a premier facility in Connecticut. From training to trialing, boarding and grooming, you name it, and QK does it. I was able to meet up with Jennifer this past October in my home state of Michigan. I caught up with her on the last leg of her yearly hunt that started in ND and ended in the U.P. Pat Johnson left for Alaska over four decades years ago, and has made the drive back home to Michigan almost every year. Typically one of his dogs rides shotgun to keep him company. Bird dogs have been a part of his journey right from the start. We talk about his first dog, his current dog, and a lot of adventures in between.

A couple times a year, I get on the microphone to just say whats on my mind. This one is about how thankful I am. 

I brought Alberto on the podcast after meeting him last spring. Hunting brought him to testing his dog. testing his dog at the highest level, took him and his brother to Montana. After passing two dogs last September at the Invitational, he drove with his brother and friends straight to Montana. What a year he has had!!

I just had the pleasure of meeting Alberto and Adrian while I was in Pennsylvania. Not only are these two the next generation of upland hunters, they are taking it to the next level. Emigrating to the United States was the start of their journey. From learning the language to learning how to train dogs. Everything was new to them. This year Alberto will be taking two dogs to the Invitational test. And if I was a betting man........

OnX hunt invited me to be on a panel of folks that have vast years of experiance with many breeds. We go round robin, answering some tough questions on what we think is, and has been or favorite breeds. What they excell and what they dont...  

Mark Peterson grew up in Michigan, working the orchards and chasing birds when he finished his chores. That work ethic formed both of his career paths. Mark and his Dad took their upland hunting to a level most will only dream about. Together in one season the traversed North America with their dogs and hunted every species of upland game. The people, places, dogs and birds made this the trip of a lifetime.

I was invited to attend the Canadian Valley QF banquet. True to form, I made some new friends, found some new places to hunt and learned a lot about the oldest game bird in the United States!  

Mike Mapes started helping a few friends with re-homing their dogs. it turns out, there are lots of good dogs that need a second chance. When people found out what Mike could do for them, the word spread. There are alot of dogs that are more, or sometimes less than their owners bargained for. Mike takes those dogs and turns the corner for them. It just shows that there is always a path for potential!!

This episode is a plea, to get more advocacy from hunters to think about what the birds need, not what we need. If you shoot a wild bird in this country, you need to support the habitat organization that support those birds. Period!!!  

Phil Francone from Meindl USA set me up with a pair of boots last summer. They were everything I could hope for. If "miles equals birds" then "Meindl's equals miles"

Jeff Funke joins me to talk about the VHDF.  Building a better mouse trap can be difficult, but a few dedicated people found that it was possible. The Versatile Hunting Dog Federation wanted to bring better clarity to the judgement of the versatile hunting dog.  For breeders and buyers, the more details in test scores will be invaluable when making decisions. The better the test. The better the dog!!

Andrew Wayment likes to write about his beloved dogs and his beloved family. So when I scheduled this interview, I also invited his brother Shawn,"The Bird Dog Doc" to join in the conversation. These two brothers share their Upland hunting and Fly fishing passion, to a point that few ever do.

Hands down, my trip to North Dakota goes into my top 5 all time hunting trips. What was different about this trip was, I came home with 2 birds and one of them was given to me! The real limits are the memories that I brought home. Taking an old dog out for what may be his last season. A young dog that showed me her stuff. And a inexperienced dog that showed me she is ready to step up to the plate and hit some home runs in the future. And new friends that will become old friends. Enjoying the show? Melvin ended up in Alaska in 1951. He took 160 acres of burned over land and built his piece of paradise. Starting a trucking line, he was the original ice road trucker, he also put in a landing strip on his property before there was an improved road to even get to his home! Probably the toughest hunt I have done in years. And certainly one of the most fun. This trip goes down as one of my favorites and this podcast may be the same.
