Parenting Through Emotions, Navigating the "I Feel, Therefore I Am Culture" and The Power of Emotions as God-Given Tools

Dallas Willard said it so well when he said, “Feelings are good servants, but they are disastrous masters.” We live in the “I feel, therefore I am” culture and no longer live in truth. In today’s show, we discuss how our emotions are tools given to us by God. God values emotions and feelings, but we must have them in the right order. We discuss how parenting is a space where emotions come up often, not just for our kids but for us as parents. We go over six big emotions that arise within us and our children, and then we explore different ways to relate to these emotions. The Intentional Motherhood Retreat

How long has it been since someone- anyone- poured into you? In 2023, over 600 mothers gathered together to learn, to worship, to grow, to encourage, and to be encouraged. We are still in awe of what God did! The Spirit moved, the Father spoke, and Jesus healed. It was so incredible that we can’t wait to do it again! We want to invite you to join us October 3rd - 5th, 2024, for a three-day retreat designed to pour into you. We know the task of motherhood is both beautiful and hard, life giving and exhausting, and we want to create a space for the Spirit to refresh you on your journey. We will press into how motherhood gently leads us to spiritual formation, how relationships are essential for the journey, and how our connection with God spills over to our connection with our families. Come to where we live, in Bend, Oregon… a place of startling beauty, a place to come away from it all. Come with your best friend, your sister, your mom— come together, or come alone. This is a retreat for any stage of motherhood you find yourself in… from mothers of infants to grandmothers and women who hope to be mothers someday. There will be something for all of you! We all need each other! We truly believe that the greatest gift you can give your children, young and old, is your transforming self. It was Dallas Willard who said, “If you don’t come apart for a while, you’ll come apart after a while.” So come! Come apart for a while with us. Come, planning to be surprised by God, to find in Him the delight your soul craves.  Sign Up Today!

Anger, triggers and being at your wit’s end (Replay)

Today we are covering the topic of one of the eight primary emotions, anger. Anger reveals what matters to us- both good and not good. Anger becomes a warning signal, compelling humble people to look inside to identify what emotion they are experiencing and why. Fear? Hurt? Sadness? Resentment? Anger is possibly the most important feeling we experience as emotional and spiritual beings because it is the first step to authentic living. It shows our yearnings and hunger for life. We will also cover five ways to start working on being aware of your anger and how to live in the power of the Spirit. Parenting in the Digital Age

Today, we discuss all things digital. How does technology form us? How does technology influence our children? What is our responsibility? The primary thing technology does is change our minds, and God invites us into the renewal of our minds. If it feels hard not to be conformed to the culture around you, you are not alone. On the show today, Brook and Elizabeth share what a digital rule of life is and what their digital rule of life looks like in their home. Creating a Culture of Connection, Expectations, and the Phonetic Pace at Christmas

In today’s show, we have Diane, Elizabeth, and Sally Lemos Lpc sharing a conversation about Christmas and all the expectations and pressures that can come up. So often, we strive to do everything, but do we know why we are doing everything? Is it to perform for others or even to prove something to ourselves? It’s so easy to make Christmas about what we want instead of focusing on something far more important: how we make others around us feel. We hope this conversation feels like you are sitting with Sally, Diane, and Elizabeth as they dive into some great stories of missing the mark and how it led them to ask these three helpful yet challenging questions:   1.    How do we not miss this Christmas?   2.    Who or how do I want to be?   3.    What kind of culture am I trying to create?Merry Christmas and Enjoy! Scriptures mentioned:1 John 3v19-202 Corinthians 10v13 Follow us on Instagram: @intentional_parents @brook_mosser @Emosser @philmcomer @dianewcomer FREE TEXT Message Daily Devotional 👇🏼https://intentional.flocknote.com MERCH: Gear for the journeyhttps://www.intentionalparents.org/store Grab a copy of our book: Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (Now available in audiobook!)https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Passionate-Jesus-Followers-Intentional/dp/0310347777 Website: intentionalparents.org Join our Legacy Builders: https://www.intentionalparents.org/donate-index-impact Blog: https://www.intentionalparents./blog GET: The Intentional Film Serieshttps://www.intentionalparents.org/film-series

Overcapacity, navigating death, and fathering from a deficit (Q+R)

Phil+Diane and Brook+Elizabeth respond to a few great questions in today's show. First, they talk about what to do when you feel overwhelmed with the load God has given you. Do you constantly feel like you are living outside of your capacity with no margin? Secondly, they discuss how to navigate the subject of death with your kids. This can be a tough subject when your kids feel afraid and even harder when you, as a parent, have fears around death, too. Lastly, they respond to a question about fathers cultivating a vision for their family and what to do if you never had a good father to show you how to do that for your family. In today's Show, Phil and Brook break down what consecration means and what it looks like to live a life consecrated to God. They get honest about how it is so easy not to live this way and how we can push against the current culture to move closer to holiness. Life is hard, and we all find things that help us cope or soothe our pain, but it leads us away from consecration and brings us more pain. Brook and Phil squash any elements of shame in this process and bring hope through small, practical ways when we choose little acts of obedience daily. A common theme of this episode circles around the truth that when you give up more of yourself and live a consecrated life, you receive more of God's spirit, which helps you continue to live a holy life and receive His blessings. This work of consecration is so important because what we don't deal with becomes a trap for our children. It is our responsibility to stop sin and release blessings to our children. May this be a part of your legacy in your family? Enjoy!Three things that make up the idea of consecration: 1)Cleansing2)Sacrificing3)Dedication 3 Reasons that hold us back from Consecration: 1)Compromise2)Carelessness3)CowardessFollow us on Instagram:@intentional_parents@brook_mosser@Emosser@philmcomer@dianewcomer FREE TEXT Message Daily Devotional 👇🏼 https://intentional.flocknote.com Grab a copy of our book: Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (Now available in audiobook!)https://amzn.to/3ReOgc4  Website: intentionalparents.org Join our Legacy Builders: https://www.intentionalparents.org/donate-index-impact Blog: https://www.intentionalparents./blog GET: The Intentional Film Serieshttps://www.intentionalparents.org/film-series The Intentional Motherhood Retreathttps://www.intentionalparents.org/motherhood-retreat

Bullies, mean girls,  and creating an environment of safety, not judgment

Mean girls are not just in the movies. Today, Diane and Elizabeth talk about bullies, in particular mean girls. Our culture tolerates a level of speech towards one another that we have never seen before, especially online. It's everywhere, from prominent leaders to our families and children. The culture our children are navigating through is tricky, and the method of killing them with kindness doesn't always work. Diane and Elizabeth share some wisdom about what to do if your daughter is facing a mean girl. What does it look like to follow Christ and also draw boundaries? How do we teach our daughters to hold space for empathy so they can see that there is a story behind each mean girl? And finally, how can we teach our daughters to forgive the mean girl or bully even if repairing the relationship isn't possible? We hope this conversation today will help you navigate the problematic relationships that your daughters will encounter at some point. Miscarriage, loss, and the aftermath (Interview with Ryan and Annie Miller)

In today's show, we have the privilege of talking to a beautiful couple, our friends Ryan and Annie Miller, about a challenging and sensitive subject. Ryan and Annie started a non-profit called Share the Struggle. Share The Struggle is a non-profit organization that seeks to showcase God's redemptive power through media. This ministry began out of a profoundly sorrowful experience of the miscarriage of their first baby. As they walked through this trauma, it became clear that so many couples were silently grieving this same loss. They found that this trauma was not being talked about nearly enough, even though 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, leaving many couples suffering alone, especially women. Today's conversation is raw and super helpful if you have experienced a miscarriage or if you know someone who has. We go into practical help, like, things you do not want to say to someone going through a miscarriage as well as what words and actions are beneficial. We are so grateful for our friends and their ministry and all the tools they provide. We know this subject is deeply felt by many, and we hope this conversation brings help and healing. Depression, anxiety, praying over our children, and the transition from kids to teens (Q+R)

In today's show, we respond to some of your great questions. We cover praying over your children, what it looks like, and what it doesn't look like. We discuss how easy it can be to use prayer to manipulate our children into the version we hope to see more of in them. We dive into some helpful and practical tips on praying over our children that you can start doing today! The second question we respond to is connected to the first because so much of parenting comes down to the connection between God and our children, the relationship between parents and their children, and sibling to sibling, to name a few. We talk about practicing truth and love with our kids to build trust and respect in our connection with them. We explore the difference between discipline and punishment and why being willing to be the bad guy sometimes as a parent is essential. Also, some funny stories in today's show illustrate our responses to these excellent questions. We hope you laugh and learn and find room for grace as you practice these tips in your families. Measuring up, our mental committee, I should’s, the impossible mother, and shepherding our homes

Today's show talks about five ways moms are called to be shepherds in their homes. We define what a Shepherd is and what it looks like for moms of all ages. Our conversation circles around some vital elements like mom guilt, God's sovereignty, guarding what God has entrusted to you, pursuing wholeness, and continuing to grow in each stage of motherhood. As moms, it is easy to feel like we have to do this all perfectly, and if we don't, we are messing up our children. Still, we invite you into this conversation today to pause and consider a different perspective of walking toward transformation instead of perfection. It's a journey of holding your kid's hands as you walk closer to your Father in heaven and bringing your children along the walk. The five steps we discuss today are trusting in the sovereign God, Heeding the shepherd's call, Embracing obscurity, pursuing an integral life, and cultivating leadership competency. How to Discern God’s Will and The False Self

In today’s show, we talk about the different processes by which we make decisions. We make decisions every day, and sometimes they can be life-changing. Our culture tells us one way, but as followers of Jesus, how do we discern God’s will with the choices that come our way? We break down three different ways people make decisions: The way of Logic, The ignition way, and The way of discernment. We share some real-life stories where we learned the hard way and explore the lessons from those experiences. We dive into practical ways to help you navigate the discerning process. We cover topics such as how our egos or false self can affect our decision-making abilities and how some may have misconceptions about suffering related to God’s will for our lives. Today, we ask a couple of essential questions that can help you uncover some patterns that may make you stuck; What do I believe about God, and Does he want the best for me and my family? We also discuss balancing our feelings while not letting our emotions rule our decisions. We have been working thoughtfully to develop a process to help our own family make big decisions and discern God’s will for our lives. We genuinely hope these nine steps bless and assist you as you walk through your moments of discernment that arise. This process takes time, and we hope to encourage you to practice these steps slowly. The process: Focusing your attention on GodConsider what it means to be totally attached to God’s agenda and willLay your choice before God and examine the matter thoroughly.Share your desires with God. Suffering, Prayer, and How to teach your kids to Talk to God (Interview with Strahan Coleman)

Today we have Strahan Coleman on the show. Strahan is a writer, spiritual director, and award-winning musician from New Zealand. In this rich conversation, Brook and Strahan discuss chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and how to find a vibrant faith amidst these challenges. They talk about the importance of shifting our prayer lives from following a prayer formula and seeking to perform for God to prayers that are intimate and purely about beholding the presence of God. In Strahan’s words, “Prayer equals nakedness with God.” They also discuss the constant noise in our culture and why bringing the volume down in our homes is essential. Strahan shares with Brook some practical ways he teaches his kids to hear from God. He gives us an inside view of his intentionality in teaching his kids to bring their heart posture to a constant awareness and integration of God in their everyday lives. Being oblivious, closed family culture, idols, absorbing without resentment, and why extended family is often the hardest

Why is it that sometimes close personal family and extended family are the hardest? Occasionally well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies, but why? What does the Bible say about this paradigm, and how can we live at peace even in tension? We discuss our responsibility in the relationship and the part we can play. What does Matthew 10v34-37 mean when Jesus talks about not bringing peace, but a sword and "turning man against father, a daughter against a mother"? We break down the context of this scripture and define what an idol is, the purpose of not having idols, and how idols can be good things, just in the wrong order. We also discuss nine ways to honor your convictions and your family. Enjoy! Nine ways to move towards health.    1.    Pray   2.    Have a conversation   3.    Treat them with honor   4.    Let your words be full of grace   5.    Is this a hill you want to die on?     6.    Share the truth in Love   7.    Keep short accounts   8.    Seek counsel   9.    Recognize it is up to them  Follow us on Instagram:@intentional_parents@brook_mosser@Emosser@philmcomer@dianewcomer Grab a copy of our book: Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (Now available in audiobook!)https://amzn.to/3ReOgc4 Website: intentionalparents.org Join our Legacy Builders: https://www.intentionalparents.org/donate-index-impact Blog: https://www.intentionalparents./blog GET: The Intentional Film Serieshttps://www.intentionalparents.org/film-series The Intentional Leadership Retreat:https://www.intentionalparents.org/leadership-retreat

How long has it been since someone- anyone- poured into you? How long has it been since your soul brimmed so full of beauty, hope, healing, and joy that every jolt of real-life motherhood spilled overflowing abundance onto those you love? We know the answer: too long, if ever. As a mom, you give and give and give, until there’s nothing left. We want to invite you to join us for a three-day retreat of being given to. We know (and live) the beautiful challenge of motherhood. We know the feelings of aloneness, of inadequacy, of fear— of weariness— that so often weigh us down in the midst of all it means to be a mother. We’ve designed this retreat with your needs in mind. Your need for connection with like-minded women, your need for the gentleness of spiritual formation, and ultimately, your need to be strengthened for the task of motherhood. Come to where we live, in Bend, Oregon— surrounded by snowcapped mountains, with rivers and trails and alpine lakes— a place of startling beauty. A place to come away from it all. Come with your best friend, your sister, your mom— come together or come alone. It was Dallas Willard who said, “If you don’t come apart for a while, you’ll come apart after a while.” So come! Come apart for a while with us. Come, planning to be surprised by God, to find in Him the delight your soul craves. Join us October 5th-7th 2023 in Bend OR Motherhood Retreat Sign Up

Anger, triggers, and being at your wit's end

Today we are covering the topic of one of the eight primary emotions, anger. Anger reveals what matters to us- both good and not good. Anger becomes a warning signal, compelling humble people to look inside to identify what emotion they are experiencing and why. Fear? Hurt? Sadness? Resentment? Anger is possibly the most important feeling we experience as emotional and spiritual beings because it is the first step to authentic living. It shows our yearnings and hunger for life. We will also cover five ways to start working on being aware of your anger and how to live in the power of the Spirit. Are the various gender roles in marriage just cultural constructs? What is the purpose of the different roles in a marriage, and what does the Bible say about it? Part 4 (Wives)

Ladies! Today is for you. We are wrapping up a mini-series on gender roles in marriage. Elizabeth, Brook, and Diane cover what a woman’s part is in marriage from a biblical perspective. We cover the foundational terms of the Hebrew word “helper”  (Ezer). We talk about the dance that wives and husbands play and how to live them together. We also cover the six questions for self-exam, which are: 1. Am I cultivating a life that has space to become the type of woman Proverbs refers to? 2. Am I relying on my own power or the power of the Holy Spirit to be a Godly wife, mother, and disciple? 3. Am I begrudgingly giving my husband respect because I don’t think he deserves it? 4. Have I willingly accepted my God-given role as a partner with my husband? 5. Am I continuing to develop the gifts and passions God has entrusted to me? 6. Are you trusting God with what you can’t control, fix, or understand? Are the various gender roles in marriage just cultural constructs? What is the purpose of the different roles in a marriage, and what does the Bible say about it? Part 2 (Husbands)

We are continuing a mini-series on gender roles in marriage. Today Elizabeth, Brook, and Phil cover what a man's part is in marriage from a biblical perspective. We cover six things that husbands need to be aware of and focus on in their God-given role and so much more. The six things are 1. Are you serving your family currently? 2. Are you teachable? 3. Does your schedule indicate that your family is a top priority in time, energy, and focus? 4. Are you taking the initiative to lead your wife spiritually by sharing the things God is teaching you? 5. Are you a good listener? 6. Are you accepting equal responsibility for the children? Even if your wife is better at some aspects of parenting, your children are your responsibility. Your wife needs a partner who willingly shares the load with her. Are the various gender roles in marriage just cultural constructs? What is the purpose of the different roles in a marriage, and what does the Bible say about it? Part 1

Today we are starting a mini-series on gender roles in marriage. Recently Brook was asked to do a teaching on the topic of gender roles in marriage, and this launched us into the idea of talking more about the subject. We all have different expectations coming into marriages, whether from media, our family of origin, or even our other friend's marriages. We will cover what did God initially intended for gender roles in marriage? How have men and women corrupted that good? What has Jesus done to redeem gender roles? We will also cover six questions for husbands to ask themselves and six questions for wives to ask themselves to see how this is playing out in their marriage. Perfectionism and Idealism in your marriage, what does Jesus mean by being perfect and hoping for miracles when we are called to manage

Today we talk about Perfectionism and its cousin Idealism. How does that play out in our lives and marriage? Is Idealism that big of a deal? What about being a perfectionist? Can that hurt me or those I love? Carl Jung said, "Every form of addiction is bad, whether the narcotic is alcohol or morphine or idealism." So how are we to live differently and undo some of the cycles of pain that perfectionism and idealism cause? We cover three ways to begin healing your marriage and home with Jesus at the center and what happens to children that grow up in a perfectionist home. Post-traumatic growth, your superpower, and what God does with our trauma

Make no doubt: trauma shakes up our world and forces us to take another look at our cherished goals and dreams. We tend to rely on a particular set of beliefs and assumptions about the benevolence and controllability of the world and God, and traumatic events typically shatter that worldview as we become shaken from our ordinary perceptions. Today we walk through seven areas of growth that spring from adversity and how God uses our suffering and trauma to give us what we need most. The seven areas are: 1 Greater appreciation of life, 2 Greater appreciation, and strengthening of close relationships, 3 Increased compassion, 4 The identification of new possibilities or a purpose in life, 5 Greater awareness of personal strengths, 6 Creative growth, 7 Enhanced spiritual development. The Origin Story: The Intentional Film Series

It’s out!!!! The Intentional Film Series launches today! For quite some time it has been the dream of the Intentional to be able to invite anyone and everyone to learn how to raise the next generation of passionate Jesus followers. Though none of us claim to know it all— not even close!— this message has been the heartbeat of our calling for over four decades. Starting with very little understanding of how to pass a vibrant, compelling faith on to our children, we have now spent the better part of our lives listening, learning, researching, studying, and practicing what we teach in “The Intentional Film Series”. Will you join the generations of Jesus followers who have taken God’s words seriously— to intentionally make disciples of your own children, who in turn will make disciples of the next generation? Will you teach your sons and daughters to know Jesus intimately and follow Him faithfully? We hope The Intentional Film Series, Raising Passionate Jesus Followers, will help in what is your greatest calling. To vaccinate or not to vaccinate, is that the only question?

Many of you have asked us how to navigate this conversation with family, friends, and acquaintances. Jesus was clear about the way of love, and this isn't the first time in history when there have been strong disagreements. We talk through three ways to have these conversations and prioritize the way of Jesus and others. We touch on the need to turn to each other, not against each other, to hear each other with compassion, not judgment, and we need to sacrificially help each other through this challenging time, not withdraw into self-centered seclusion. Try Softer (Interview with Aundi Kolber)

Today we interview the brilliant Aundi Kolber! Aundi the author or Try Softer: a fresh approach to move us out of anxiety, stress and survival mode and into a life of connection and joy.She also JUST released a companion book called Try Softer: a guided journey. In a world that preaches a “try harder” gospel—just keep going, keep hustling, keep pretending we’re all fine—we’re left exhausted, overwhelmed, and so numb to our lives. If we’re honest, we’ve been over-functioning for so long, we can’t even imagine another way. How else will things get done? How else will we survive? It doesn’t have to be this way. Aundi Kolber believes that we don’t have to white-knuckle our way through life. In her debut book, Try Softer, she’ll show us how God specifically designed our bodies and minds to work together to process our stories and work through obstacles. Through the latest psychology, practical clinical exercises, and her own personal story, Aundi equips and empowers us to connect us to our truest self and truly live. This is the “try softer” life. We talk about parenting in our current climate of burnout and anxiety, how to stay within our window of tollorance, how to recognize when we are outside of it and how to acknowledge our own trauma and begin to heal. Follow us on instagram:@intentional_parents@brook_mosser@Emosser@philmcomer@dianewcomer Grab a copy of our book: Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (Now available in audiobook!)https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Passionate-Jesus-Followers-Intentional/dp/0310347777 Website: intentionalparents.orgSupport: https://www.intentionalparents.org/giveBlog: https://www.intentionalparents./blogBooks: Try Softerhttps://amzn.to/3AdeXnC The Try Softer Guided Journeyhttps://amzn.to/3mrjXju

The Primal Path (Interview with Jon Tyson)

Get ready for today’s podcast! Wow do we have a fun interview for you. We recently interviewed Jon Tyson who is a Pastor and Church planter in New York City. He has also recently developed an amazing tool called The Primal Path. We walk through the historical fact that up until this point in time most societies have had a recognizable pathway into man hood and currently most modern cultures do not. How does that fact effect our young men? What path should our sons be on to become men of consequence? How do we as fathers become intentional fathers? The Primal Path helps overwhelmed but determined fathers raise sons of consequence and the Primal Path has 4 main parts, Preparation, Initiation, Formation, and Recognition. Fathers you especially do not want to miss this episode.
