Meagan McCrary - Smart, Simple & Straightforward

Welcome to Everything Yoga – Smart, Simple and Straightforward with your host Meagan McCrary, yoga aficionado and author of “Pick Your Yoga Practice: Exploring and Understanding Different Styles of Yoga.” On a mission to give yoga a real voice from a practical perspective, she’s here today to set the story straight with the top three yoga myths. Most of us in the U.S. have an idea of what yoga is, something to do with hot, sweaty classes, acrobatic poses and having the best booty ever, however, there is so much more to the vast, comprehensive tradition of yoga than the physical practice, known as hatha yoga. Meagan breaks down what yoga actually is and explains how the practice has evolved in modern culture. She also address the most common excuse for not practicing – I’m not flexible enough to do yoga – and why not all yoga is created equal.  If you thought yoga teachers were just spiritual hippies, all rainbows and butterflies, guess again. Meagan will prove to you why she and her collueges are some of the most knowledgable and educated professionals in the health and fitness industry. To connect with her visit: facebook.com/meaganmccraryyoga and please feel free to message her with any questions concerning yoga, from why is downdog so uncomfortable to how can yoga help my sex life, and she'll do her best to address them on the show.

Sione Fa - Life After The Biggest Loser... Sione Fa, one of the contestants from the Season 7 of "The Biggest Loser," had seen his weight bounce up and down most of his life. He's tried every diet out there, which always caused him to gain the weight back -- and then some. As the owner of his own company, it was the long hours at work that kept him from eating right and exercising, and caused his weight to balloon to a staggering 372 pounds. But when he realized he never wanted to be a fat dad, and wanted to prevent his children from ending up the same way, he did something about it and lost over 130 pounds. For Sione, it wasn't just a matter of shedding pounds, but also a chance to beat the odds his Tongan genetics had dealt him. Today's podcast features an personal interview with Beryl Bender Birch, the author of "Power Yoga."  People, especially gym folks, love their Power Yoga. What most people don't realize is that Power Yoga is essentially Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga made American. Beryl Bender Birch (on the east coast) and Bryan Kest (on the west coast) were both studying, practicing, and teaching Ashtanga Yoga when they both decided to coin the term Power Yoga to make the practice more accessible to all Americans.  Beryl explains that the practice is still spiritual, although minus the overtly esoteric, becuase it's yoga. The two go hand-in-hand. She also talks shop on beginners, alignment and the importance of learning from a skilled teacher. She warns against jumping right into a full-on Power Yoga class and why yoga is different from any sport, workout, or physical activity: Just becuase you're a strong athlete doesn't mean yoga's going to be a breeze.   Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. Here we will cover: what water does in the body, how much water you should be drinking, what are the differences in types of water, what is alkalized water, what is electrolyte water, good ways to make sure you are drinking enough water.
