8 Coming Out Stories We Love pt 2
The Lesbian Review Podcast
Sheena is joined by Tara Scott today to talk about coming out stories. This two part podcast series takes us through 8 books about different types of coming out but each one special in its own way.
Part 2 of 2 - Oh NO, I think I am gay!
It is dangerous to come out - Dystopian, political, historical - physically dangerous and could get killed, imprisoned etc
It is not a great idea to come out - Could be disowned, could lose your fanbase and all your money
Why is it important to still tell stories where coming out has really bad consequences?
Sheena’s Picks
The Amnesia Project by Barbara Winkes
Substitute For Love by Karin Kallmaker
Tara’s Picks
The Covert Captain: Or, A Marriage Of Equals by Jeannelle M. Ferreira

3 Books That Surprised Me
3 Books That Surprised Me
The Lesbian Review Podcast
Sheena is all alone today but that’s okay because the topic of this podcast is 3 Books That Surprised Me.
I am rarely surprised by a book. You see, I studied film for four years and what that means is that I studied storytelling and the mechanics of it to the point where I can unpack, repack and shuffle stories like they are playing cards. Couple that with being in the publishing industry for 10 odd years and being a reviewer for close to five years now and you have someone who is hardly ever surprised by a book.
This is why books that are able to give me something truly unique take my breath away. And today I want to share three such books with you.
These are not in any particular order or genre, they are just books that I didn’t see coming.
Books I talk about
When you use the links in this review and buy within 24 hours of clicking then we get a small commission that helps us run the site and it costs you nothing extra
The One by KC Luck
Green-eyed Monster by Gill McKnight
Daughter Of The Sun by Effie Calvin
Here’s a fun fact about me: I will hardly ever read a synopsis before buying a book. I may skim it to see what genre it is but I will never read the full synopsis because I want to go into it with no idea of what the story is so that there is more of a chance for surprise.

10 Reasons Romance Rocks
10 Reasons Romance Rocks
The Lesbian Review Podcast
Sheena is joined by Tara today to talk about the many reasons that Romance is an important genre and should be appreciated not laughed at or made fun of.
Their 10 Reasons are:
Smart women write them and smart women read them.
Romance novels are difficult to write and super competitive.
Readers need to believe in love and forever.
Romance novels can take you out of the world.
They show positive examples of women going after their own pleasure.
Romance authors do their research, so we can learn a lot.
Romances spread across all genres making them available to any book lover.
It gives you a two sides perspective on romance rather than the one sided view we have on life.
Just like pop music is the biggest selling music, so romance is the biggest selling genre and there is no reason to listen to people who are naysayers.
Romances support the book industry.
If this podcast got you in the mood for a good romance then check out our Top 10 Lesbian Romances here

Note: Sheena categorizes it as Thawing The Ice Queen/Taming The Beast because sometimes characters are cold and sometimes characters are just wild but either way when you add just the right woman to the mix they become much more lovable. Because really, all you need is love.

Poppy Jenkins
Synopsis
Two old friends, one hot summer, a whole load of confusion. Poppy Jenkins makes everyone smile. She’s the heart of Wells, a beautiful village in mid-Wales, leaving light and laughter in her wake. She has a doting family, an errant dog and a little sister with a nose for mischief. But she’s the only gay in the village and it’s a long time since she kissed a girl: the chance of romance in sleepy Wells is rarer than a barking sheep. If she doesn’t think too hard, life is cosy, until a smart sports car barrels into town with the last woman Poppy wants to see behind the wheel. Beautiful Rosalyn Thorn was once Poppy’s high school BFF even though she was trouble. Then one day she abandoned Wells and Poppy without explanation. Now the highflier is back and bound to cause fresh havoc in the village and with Poppy’s heart; folk are not happy. Wells needs to wake up to the 21st century and Rosalyn can help, but old prejudices die hard. If they can be friends it could be the chance to make everyone’s happy ever after. Couldn’t it?
