Gunnar Bentz

Gunnar Bentz joins the podcast this week fresh off his second Olympic appearance! Gunnar has been prominent name in the swimming world over the last decade dating back to his early high school days when he was breaking National Age Group Records. After high school, Gunnar joined coach Jack Bauerle at the University of Georgia where he became a multi-time NCAA All-American and 2016 Olympian. After graduating in 2018 Gunnar transitioned to a pro career and ultimately moved to Austin, Texas to train with the GOAT, Eddie Reese to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Maya DiRado

Maya DiRado is a former member of Team USA and gold medalist from the 2016 Olympic Games! Maya swam four years at Stanford where she won the 200 and 400 IM at the NCAA Championships. After graduating from Stanford in 2014, Maya was reluctant to test the waters of pro swimming, but after some convincing by her coach Gregg Meehan, she decided to give it a go. This proved to be a smart decision for Maya as she went on to win four medals at the 2016 Olympics (2x Gold, 1x Silver, 1x Bronze) including a thrilling upset of Katinka "Iron Lady" Hosszu in the 200 backstroke in the final race of her swimming career! Katie Meili

Katie Meili is a former member of the US National Team who won two medals (1x Gold, 1x Bronze) in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Katie grew up and started her swimming career in North Texas before committing to Columbia University where she competed for four years in college. Katie has a unique story as she is part of a small contingent of mid-major swimmers who have qualified for finals at the NCAA Championships. At the 2013 NCAA Championship Meet in Indianapolis, Katie finished 3rd in the 100 Breast, 9th in the 200 Breast, and 7th in the 200 IM. After college, Katie went on to train as a pro swimmer under legendary coach, David Marsh. It was under Marsh's training that Katie was able to explode onto the national and international scene to become one of the best breaststrokers in the world. In 2016, Katie competed for Team USA at the Rio Olympics and came home with a bronze medal in the 100 Breaststroke and a gold in the 4x100 Medley Relay. After retiring from swimming in 2019 Katie began focusing on her law degree and just recently graduated from Georgetown Law. We hope you enjoy this great interview! Anita Nall

Anita Nall is a former Olympic Champion, World Record-Holder and longtime member of Team USA. Anita Nall grew up in Maryland and swam on North Baltimore Aquatic Club (NBAC) when she was in her younger years. At just 15 years old at the 1992 Olympic Trials Anita broke the world record in the women’s 200 Meter Breaststroke becoming one of the youngest world record holders in history. As a 16-year-old at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona, Anita came away with one gold (4x100 Medley Relay), one silver (100 Breaststroke), and one bronze (200 Breaststroke). Currently, Anita is a functional nutrition and wellness expert and she aims to teach coaches and athletes about the importance of health and how it correlates to HIGH PERFORMANCE. Ugur Taner

Ugur Taner is a former member of Team USA from 1993-2000 and also had a great career representing the Golden Bears at Cal Berkeley. As a Turkish-born swimmer, Ugur also had Turkish citizenship which allowed him to compete for his native country Turkey at the 1992 Summer Olympics when he was only 18 years old. After the 1992 Games Ugur attended Cal where he was a critical piece to their collegiate success swimming under the late, great Nort Thornton. Ugur was a great freestyler and butterfly swimmer for Team USA in the 90's and was able to win multiple international gold medals including a relay gold at the 1994 World Championships in Rome. March Madness: Hoffer and Golden Bears Shine Bright On Day 2 (feat. Will Licon)

On Day 2 of the Men’s NCAA Championships, we saw Ryan Hoffer become the second faster performer in history in the 50 freestyle behind only the great Caeleb Dressel. Cal took a lead big lead at the start of the night with some big swims in the 500 by Sean Grieshop and Zach Yeadon and in the 200 IM by Hugo Gonzalez and Carson Foster, but Texas wouldn’t go away quietly. Texas was able to finish the night strong with a 1-2 finish in diving and a 1st place finish in the 400 Medley Relay with the quartet of Staka, Corbeau, Jiang, and Krueger. This is setting up for a HUGE Day 3, or as some call it, “Moving Day.”

March Madness: Virginia, Queens Take Home NCAA Titles

We made it to the end of Day 4 after an incredible week of racing! At DII Champs, the Queens Men & Women took home national titles after fighting in a tough battle with Drury all week long. Karol Ostrowski closed out his incredible meet by breaking another NCAA record in the 100 free with a time of 41.25! On the women's side, Bec Cross of Drury got her second victory of the weekend by being the top finisher in the 200 breast. At the DI Women's Champs, Virginia claimed the top spot to secure their first ever national championship; A great piece to add to the puzzle for coach Todd DeSorbo and one that he and his team will cherish for years to come. March Madness: Maggie MacNeil Obliterates 100 Fly Record, Mallory Comerford Joins the Show

Day 3 had A LOT of excitement and perhaps the Swim of the Year! Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil torched a 48.89 100 Butterfly to become the first woman ever to break the 49-second barrier and bring home Michigan’s first NCAA Title in the event. NC State solidifies their spot in 2nd place behind Virginia after a trio of NCAA championships to bring home to Raleigh. Sophie Hansson got things going by winning the 100 Breast (57.23) and was followed up by Katherine Berkoff in the 100 Backstroke (49.74) for NC State’s second win of the night. To close out the evening, the quartet of Berkoff, Hansson, Rowe, and Alons took down Virginia in a wire-to-wire victory in the 200 Medley Relay (1:33.18). At DII NCAA’s Queens holds a comfortable lead on both the men’s and women’s sides and we will see if they can close it out for the win on Day 4.

This is day two of our March Madness NCAA updates. At the DII champs after a stormy day 1 the teams are back and ready to go. Aaron Peirsol

Aaron Peirsol is a multi-time Olympic Champion and currently holds the world record in the 200 Meter Backstroke. Aaron had a storied career as one of the most talented backstrokers in history after competing for Team USA at the international level for over 10 years. Peirsol attended the University of Texas and trained under coach Eddie Reese for two years before signing with Nike and becoming a professional athlete. During that time Aaron still stayed on track to finish his degree in Political Science and also continued to train with his great college coaches, Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik. Peirsol qualified for his first Olympic team in 2000 at age 17 and was one of the younger members of Team USA other than Michael Phelps who was only 15 at the time. Aaron would win his first Olympic medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 by finishing second in the 200 back and his career would go on to skyrocket from that point. In 2004, Aaron was a triple gold medalist taking home the ultimate hardware in both backstroke events as well as the 4 x 100 Medley Relay. Aaron had another great showing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and again won the 100 backstroke in addition to being a member of the 4 x 100 Medley Relay again. In 2011, Aaron hung up the cap and goggles and ended his swimming career with a lot to be proud of. James Fike is the founder and CEO of Fike Swim, which is a swimwear and equipment company that follows the mantra, "Swim Different." Ryan Murphy a.k.a “The King of Backstroke,” is a multi-time Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder. Daniel Krueger

Daniel Krueger grew up in McFarland, Wisconsin where he quickly became one of the top age-group swimmers in the country. As a senior in high school Daniel was ranked as the #4 recruit in the class of 2018 and ultimately chose to take his talents to the University of Texas. Since starting at Texas in the fall of 2018 Daniel has become one of the top sprinters in the country, winning numerous Big XII Swimming Titles as well as being named All-American in multiple events. Jack Roach

Gary Hall Jr.

Gary Hall Jr. is one of the greatest and most decorated sprinters in the history of the sport. After swimming one year at the University of Texas, Gary decided it was time to turn pro and train on his own. Eddie Reese

This week we are honored to welcome the first coach to the Ultimate Swimmer Podcast, Eddie Reese! Eddie Reese is the most decorated swim coach in history with 14 NCAA National Championship Team Titles. Eddie started his coaching career at Roswell High School in New Mexico. One year later he accepted an assistant coaching job with his alma mater at the University of Florida, where he spent six seasons before heading to Auburn where he was head coach for another six seasons. After Auburn, Eddie took the job at Texas and the rest is history. Eddie has been the head coach for the Texas Longhorns since 1978 and considered not only one of the greatest swim coaches ever, but one of the greatest coaches in any sport.
